It was the local derby and a grudge match we wanted to win, and thanks to our run machine ‘Mr Consistency’ we enjoyed a great win. Electing to bat on a difficult (awful) wicket we were soon in a bit of trouble - the variable bounce and pace, mixed with some poor shot selection accounting for the top order. Numbers 2-6 failed to reach double figures while Julian ground things out at the other end. 4/33 then 7/115 and hopes of a big total were a long way off. That said, 150 might be enough on this pitch. But a 67 run partnership between the skipper (33) and Julian (80*) carried us to a large total, and that man finally cracked 50 for the first time this season. The 56 extras played a huge part as well: 32 wides a dreadful statistic for the host team. So we went to tea feeling confident that 205 was a great total to defend and all the bowlers responded. John Simmonds (4-28) bowled with great pace collecting the trifecta of off-middle-leg stump removed from the ground. Sharjeel picked up where he left off collecting 2 wickets, and the skipper also getting 2. Roehampton all out 155. It wasn’t without dramas - Brian unlucky not to get their top scorer (71) when he was on 10 as Sharjeel shelled an absolute sitter. Another 4 catches going down on top of that. The skipper - for the first time this season - finally lost patience and gave the team a spray at drinks after some comical fielding as we conceded 6 byes off 1 delivery (do the math!). At the end of the day, it was a really good win against a side just below us that we wanted to beat. Job done. MOTM was the easiest decision of the day - Julian was outstanding, carrying the bat and guiding the team to a winning total. Well played sir! |
