Sunday 1s vs Hyde Farmers

Last weekend the Sunday XI played their annual fixture against Hyde Farmers. Hyde Farmers are an occasional Sunday side and most are familiar faces. They turned up with families who pic-nic’d on the boundary during the game. Great Sunday cricket atmosphere. They also have a couple of ex-Putney players in their team, one of whom wore his PCC shirt, which was a nice touch. And alongside all of this bonhomie, we also had a great game of cricket. We batted first and started positively with Paul Hogarth quickly getting to 24 before being caught at first slip to their opening bowler. Sarab Sethi hit a wonderful 45 in his second game for the club – well done. He was ably supported by James Hannaford (35) whose running between the wickets was at one stage on the boundary described as “languid”. This caused much debate at the time. The definition is “having or showing a disinclination for physical exertion or effort”. I will let you decide for yourself. Other points to note from our batting effort were that Justin Jarmola, sporting a new helmet, failed to repeat his heroics of last week didn’t trouble the scorers. Mark Wibberley scored a “form is temporary, class is permanent” one. Alex Warnakulasuriya, having spent a long and successful day at Ascot the day before (and it showed), suffered some karmic retribution and also failed to register a run. Ben Brook forgot to bring some form of as yet unidentified batting equipment out to the middle with him. Whatever it was, it was clearly important, as he stopped the game to come back to get it from his bag at the boundary. It obviously did the trick as he was back with us soon after (6). Sebastian Kidson hit a couple of nice shots at number 11, making 10*. Amusingly, Alex Ockwell turned normal cricketing etiquette on its head whilst umpiring. Leon Orr edged the ball onto his pads. Alex, who was umpiring at the time, was the only person on the pitch who thought it was out, but, with the certainty of Teresa May calling a snap general election, the finger went up prompting the bowler to murmur a half-hearted appeal. Credit to Hyde Farmers for overruling. We made 176 which was, according to Wibs, around about par. Sebastian Kidson bowled out one of their openers, but things were looking fairly ominous for Putney at the halfway point in Hyde Farmers’ innings – their run rate was very much on track with a lot of wickets in hand. However, the whole match turned with the third and fourth bowling changes – Alex Ockwell and Kirti Swift respectively. Wickets started to fall and the Putney team started to believe that there still might be a match on. Between them they took eight wickets and Putney won the game by 18 runs. Alex ended with 5-25 and Kurt with 3-20. There’s a self-belief about the Sunday side which means that we are winning games like last Sunday’s. The other good thing is that different players are coming to the fore each week.
