The old cliché “catches win matches” never rang truer than on the day Putney CC were handed defeat by London Gymkhana on the opening day of the season. Putney, bowling first, got the encounter underway with some tight opening overs. Gary Peters’ hounding of Gymkhana’s opening pair was a sight to behold, but they soon had their eye in and took advantage of the short boundaries. First change saw Lewis Hill incorrectly inform keeper Jon Todd of where best to stand, before taking the first wicket of the day as Gymkhana’s no. 2 found the hands of Saad “The Badger” Hannan at point with a loose shot. Sam Furber followed suit at the other end, dismissing Gymkhana’s no. 3 for a duck in his first over. Unfortunately, the Aussie went on to disappoint his teammates by revealing he is in fact human and not a wicket taking machine. He was even hit for six. It was time for a change, and who better to strike fear into the away side than Damandeep “Bam Bam” Singh. Despite trapping Gymkhana’s opener for LBW, their middle order must have missed the fear memo as boundaries started to fly across the ground. A returning Ben “Surrey” Williamson saw skipper Ebersohn save a certain boundary with his chin. Blood ensued and the match was stopped temporarily as Ebersohn was patched up a la Terry Butcher. Unlucky skip, try the hands next time though. Surrey claimed a couple of wickets, as did The Badger, but in truth the first innings was marked by several dropped catches on the home side’s part, and plenty of big shots from the away side. Gymkhana ended the innings with a towering 296. Piers Jackson and Joe “Pork” Sworder opened the Putney innings. Pork fell like pigs to the slaughter and succumbed to an LBW decision early on.* Jackson and Todd then combined to make 35 before the former was caught in the field. Verified human being Furber came in at no. 4 and took the game to Gymkhanas’ bowlers, scoring quickly with several fine boundaries. After Todd, who had played some fine strokes, nicked behind for 32, Bam Bam entered the fray. After a promising start, Putney’s no. 5 soon found himself caught in the field. After Furber was bowled for a respectable 36, Terry Butcher and his compatriot Andy Hyland were left with the unenviable task of scoring 184 runs from 19 overs. After the former was caught in the field, The Badger and Hyland combined nicely, both playing neat shots to take Putney past the 150 mark, before the latter was dismissed. The home side then called upon its tail to end the match with a respectable score, and the tail replied in earnest. Peters and Williamson put on nearly 30 runs in 5 overs, working singles through gaps in the field to take Putney past the 200 mark, with the home side eventually posting 215 all out. Here’s hoping to our first league win of the season next week. Lewis Hill *Pork related puns welcome. I’m already running out and this only my second match report. |
