Following last week’s disappointing loss away to Woodmansterne, Putney looked to make amends at home to West End Esher. The initial omens were good, skipper Devon Ebershon won the toss and Saad “The Badger” Hannan only dropped a handful of catches in the warm up. Piers Jackson and Ebersohn opened and began to make inroads. After some lusty blows, Jackson fell victim to a very good delivery and departed with 10 runs to his name. Debutant Rob Close came in a no. 3 and made an instant impact. Some well-timed drives and flicks off his legs allowed Close to consistently score singles and twos to keep the strike rotated. Ebersohn fell early on which allowed Putney’s new self-appointed all-rounder Ben “Surrey” Williamson to enter the fray at no. 4. Close and Surrey built up a considerable partnership after the early losses of Jackson and Ebersohn. But it soon came to an end after Close, who had played a solid innings, was stumped off West End Esher’s off-spinner. Damandeep “Bam Bam” Singh joined Surrey at the crease and together they added another 30 runs to Putney’s total before both were swiftly dismissed by West End Esher’s spin bowling partnership. The Badger came into steady the ship, but the tail enders did not stay with him long enough to see out the match. Putney eventually limped to 115 all-out – a total that seemed far too lean to be within any reach of winning the match. Gary Peters and Surrey opened proceedings with a reasonably tight first 10 overs, restricting the away side to just over 30 runs. It was first change Lewis Hill who made the opening breakthrough – bowling West End Esher’s no. 1. However, at the other end, the away side’s no. 2 was enjoying Hill’s sub-average short bowling. He was about to send another poor delivery to the bushes, yet from nowhere, a badger at mid-wicket acrobatically leapt skywards and held onto the ball to send the opener back to the pavilion. Said badger was later determined to be none other than Putney’s very own Saad Hannan. Hill quickly dismissed the away side’s no. 4 and 5 for ducks, but after an expensive Friday night, decided to avoid paying for a jug and proceeded to bowl drivel once again. This left skipper Ebersohn with no choice but to hook him. Vish Chandrasekhar and Chin Ratnayake then restricted the away side with some disciplined bowling. For a moment, it seemed as if Putney could pull off the impossible after Chandrasekhar trapped their no. 3 for LBW and Ratnayake took a wicket in his first over. Defending a small total was never going to be easy, and unfortunately a resilient innings from West End Esher’s no. 8 pulled the away side over the finish line with three wickets to spare. After the match, the players retired for a few beverages in the clubhouse, which allowed the Englishmen of the team to compare their sun burn with one another. Aftersun and runs needed next week. |
