We were lucky enough to play Caterham at Caterham School. An fine pavilion nestled in a wooded bowl. We lost the toss and we're put into bat on a strip that could not be far off first class standard. I guess that's part of what the lofty school fees get you. But we had to be sufficiently determined in our batting to ensure we made full use of it. Dez (1) and Tom Gasparre toughed out a series of maidens and Amogh (16) took it on after Dez fell to a lifter in the gully. But it was really all about Tom: watchful defence, the odd straight drive and crunching pulls of anything short. But it was slow going. 52-1 off 20 and the Tom was out for 71 out of 98 in the 28th. San (45) and Doug (51) played with freedom and ran hard putting on 72 in ten overs and Caterham began to wilt. There can be pressure on the fielding team too. Tush (16) and Conor (10) moved it on at the death and we closed at 221-8. And then we had to suck up the pressure as one opener crafted 60 and the other 69, batting fluently and chancelessly. At 102, we took our first wicket, a pull against JP (3-28), who earned the next two wickets also in a fine spell. But they needed less than 100 with plenty of time and wickets and Tush needed to conjure 18 overs from bowlers we'd never seen much from! Abhilash, Conor and Tom all delivered. But in these chases, scoreboard pressure can build; the chasing team needs to keep ticking even as new batters settle in lest the run rate get away. 50 off 11 became 23 off two and 16 off the last and they lacked the depth to get over the line. We just had a bit more quality and worked hard for our deserved 14 run win. |
