On paper we had a straightforward League Cup win on the common at Ham and Petersham but we had to work hard for it. Their set up is like ours – a bucolic spot on a common, beautiful trees, a track that plays a little better than it looks, club house far-far away. They are not on the flight path, however. Doug (40) and Saad (29) opened and had to play diligently against probing bowling, defending for the most part but putting away the bad ball. Many fours but few singles on the small outfield. 33-0 off ten became 71-0 off 16 as the shackles were broken. Bam Bam (22) and Tush (23) took it on with big shots but both flaked out when well set. Amogh (32) kept it ticking. But Ritwik, Chinny and Dev all chucked it away and soon we were precariously on 184-9 with 8 overs left. Certainly not a winning score. So it took some proper batting from ten and eleven Ben W (26*) and Lewis (14*) to get us to a competitive 219-9. Ben played straight, correctly and showed how easy runs could’ve been gotten. The oppo showed signs of getting them but we were always on them. They never got away against tight bowling from Sam Furber, Ben and Lewis, all of whom showed good zip. We showed commitment on a bumpy outfield and, generally held our catches. Chinny kept the pressure up but, remorselessly, the scoreboard has its own relentless logic and pretty soon they needed to score at a rate that was one an over quicker than all game. Then two an over more and then 40 off 4. Ham did not have the depth, we held the catches and saw them in the bar after. The 35* chanceless runs our last pair put on was almost exactly our winning margin, showing how you have to bat down the order. Next round in the Cup is Sunday 4th June away at Thames Ditton. |
