nunc est bibendum – “now is the time for drinking”. Horace famously wrote this in response to Octavian beating Mark Antony at Actium in 31 B.C. and ending the rule of the evil queen Cleopatra. Putney’s Sunday team will have cause for drinking due to some equally monumental feats: a win for the team; Beedle not getting DDJ (a rare occurrence indeed!); two excellent catches from JJ and Danny; two actual catches from Hannaford; but perhaps the most incredible of all was Ben Brook, captain and organiser extraordinaire, reaching 1000 runs and 100 wickets for the club. Sure, it might have taken him a while and he might have given himself champagne moment for it, but it is a great achievement and, what’s better, he promised to get a jug in next week! The day started like any other – players trickling in, Beedle getting lost and getting a pint at the wrong clubhouse, losing the toss and bowling first…and after an opening stand of 40 runs in 7 overs, we looked to be in for a long day. However, an inspired display of bowling from Beedle and Leon, the latter using a Terminator-style arm to assist him, saw four quick wickets fall and there were hopes of getting them all-out before they reached 100 (Tan was particularly hopeful!). Alas, it was not to be, as some dogged resistance from their number three got them back into the game. A few inspired moments from the team rounded off a fine bowling display, including a wicket from Soham to end on figures of 0.2-0-0-1 and an odd dismissal from my bowling, dragged on from wafting his bat outside leg-stump, earning me a spot on the more-wickets-than-runs table. The oppo scored 136 – now was the time to almost throw all our good work away. Brook and Hannaford started calmly. At his second shot for four, Brook apparently reached his landmark – one can imagine that he expectantly looked at the boundary to see if anyone would notice, if anyone would care. Apparently not. An opening stand of 49 and we were well on our way! Then, the inevitable collapse. 86-3 quickly became 101-6 and we were in all sorts of difficulty. However, there was one thing that was going to make sure we got our total…extras! 41 of those and a defiant rear-guard from JJ (32*) and Soham (4* off 19 balls) got us over the line. With jubilation from victory and the promise of free beer from the skipper next week, we departed, job well-done! MOM: JJ for his resolute batting. DDJ: Leon Orr for his Terminator-style arm TFC: Jack Bickford TMPSGAFKACMSTBMOTD: Ben Brook for passing 1000 runs and 100 wickets |
