We batted terribly and bowled poorly. They bowled with great discipline, fielded attentively and batted with a flair to which we could only aspire, delivering one of the biggest thumpings I have seen in my 25 years. For those who want to know more, we had a bright start on a hard bouncy pitch through Doug (24), Karan (22) and byes. 45-1 off 12 then we became becalmed. We have had stolid starts before, although building sound platforms upon which the big guns of Tush, Phil and Chin can then deliver against the opp's second string bowlers. This time they mustered merely ten runs between them. Maiden followed maiden. Peter Hall, Seb K (20*) and Mark Smith (16*) repaired some of the damage but 150-7 off 50 overs seemed way below par. But there was no second string attack. One of their bowlers got through 25 overs unchanged for 4-48, only two shared the overs at the other end. A magnificent performance by him and full credit to Staines for hauling it back. When we bowled, it was filthy. Chinny's first and only over went for 18. Something to do with a sore shoulder. No bowler exerted any control or consistency and they smashed us to all parts in 21.1 overs. Too many overs went for 2 boundaries as we were on our heels. A smart catch by Brian in the gully off Hensh (5-1-25-1) gave fleeting hope but they batted well and were, on the day, a class above. Tush called us together as we walked off. It was no Hensh-style "spew" but a clear reminder that to stay top we have to play so much better than this sorry performance. Well played Staines. |
