In the end this was a very disappointing performance. We batted well and fielded well enough, Amogh putting in a real shift, but we really should’ve defended 239. That we did not was down to the fact that not one but two bowlers inexplicably got the yips, forgetting at which point to release the ball. Full toss, beamer, half tracker, no ball, wide. Ugly stuff which put the skipper under pressure and emboldened the oppo, one of whom made a very fine 103* to bring the game home for them. It could’ve been so different. The pitch was a bit of a shocker, the new ball pitching with clouds of dust, but one could stay in on it if one applied oneself. BamBam (31) helped us to 88-4 of 22 overs before Chinny (83) and Doug (46) put on 122 in 21 overs. Chinny batted really well, watchful in defence and unloading big drives and pulls. He frustrated them by nicking through empty first slip a few times, a really fine knock. 209-4 became 239ao. Fair play to Merton, for hauling it back. Hensh (11*) unleashed his Aussie style uppercut about which he had earlier warned us. They started brightly before Mark Smith got one (at last) in the right place for Karan to move well and snaffle the edge to his right, one of three good catches for him. 40-1 off ten became 57-3 off 18 but it was too hard for Tush to maintain control with malfunctioning bowlers. 44 extras did not help. Merton too put on over 100 for the fifth wicket, with their big man really batting well, merely waiting for the all too frequent bad ball and seeing them over the line with plenty to spare. |
