Another thumping win for us against a poor Whiteley Village team. They batted first on a very hard strip that had a few cracks which demanded some caution. But when your numbers two, three and four all get ducks, what can you do? Mark Smith made the first breakthrough, helped by Matt Cope on League dayboo taking a nice overhead catch at mid on as their opener sought to tee off. Brian was supported by a smart catch by Tom Seaman at mid off, whose lovely footwork helped him get into the right position. Tom put in a spell to get three wickets, one given caught behind when neither keeper nor bowler appealed. You don’t see that every day. And he took a second good catch. I bet he can bat too. Ollie D clung on to a full bloodied cut at point. We kept taking wickets even though their tail inevitably wagged as they limped to 123ao in the final over, Alex Ockwell bowling the last batter with a pie. Matt Cope teed off right from the get go: fours off balls one and two, big drives. Doug scratched out a maiden. Matt crushed another couple of fours including a lost ball off the third over. Sixes (five of them) started raining down. Alarmed motorists started moving their cars from around the ground as the hits kept coming, relieved only when Doug was on strike. But Whiteley’s spirit was broken, not least when midwicket and the keeper collided to spill and easy catch. Matt nicked off on 75 out of 110. Doug (30*) nurdled ever onwards as we strolled over the line in the 18th over. |
