It turns out that we were wrong. We thought we needed to win our last **two** games to win promotion but now we know that we still control our own destiny: a win at home against relegated Shepperton sees us up. Still, It was a great game of cricket against Merton, but we came up just a little short. They batted first. Ben Brook (2-30) and Paul Hogarth, on that Sunday to Saturday 2’s conveyor belt, both put in great shifts to ensure Merton never got away. We took wickets all the way through, Tush 3-36, Mark “E” Smith 3-24, Tom S economical, but Merton kept finding someone to get twenty odd. We kept taking great catches: three by Tush at mid off, Parshav diving at square leg, Ben one handed at point, Doug running in the deep, all off well timed strokes. Probably the best catching performance I have seen. Still, their 177 did not feel beyond us. Doug (25) and Amogh (49) gave a sound start, 44 off the first 12 overs against a spicy attack that had them hopping. But stump to stump at one end and decent leg spin the other brought a pressure wicket at 52 in the 17th. Ollie D (23) pushed it on attractively and we were well placed at 92-2 with 18 overs left. Four and six both got ducks and we lacked the depth to mount an effective assault. We took catches off full bloodied strokes, the many catches they took - they could wait for the ball to land softly in their hands. Maybe that was the difference. |
