Beedle, Bone and mcGurk showed how committed they were by meeting an hour early in the White Swan to discuss tactics. After the whole team had assembled (all 10 of us after a no show) we had a lively discussion about the merits of batting first, then Bone promptly lost the toss and let the oppo ‘choose’ to bat first. Beedle to Bone is a phrase that usually describes the passing of Tinnies but unbelievably in the first over of the day this referred to a catch taken off a nick down the leg side. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love you my Bokkie Bok. The second soon followed for Beedle and Ajay snaffled the third, from of all things, a searing bouncer the batsmen was unable to keep from chopping on. Mcgurk kept the brakes on in the middle overs, not really a pitch for a leggie. His wicket ended a spell of outrageous on field ‘banter’ with a batsmen who was so posh he batted in a horse riding helmet. Said helmet proved ineffective at protecting his spectacles which ended up in several pieces when McGurk, surely inspired by Ajay, pulled out a bouncer. Clearly rattled he nicked off next ball. Soham toiled away, metronomic as ever and could’ve had a couple more had a few catches stuck. Just before the openers returned to wrap things up there was time for the obligatory Tan Balendra moment of the match. Another wicket for the big man and another huge, open shirted celebration! All that remained was for Beedle and Bone to link up again. The last ball of the innings saw Bone stump a lad on 49, classy and classless at the same time! Won’t see many Bowled Beedle stumped Bone, a collectors item indeed. By now it was late. Ajay’s approach to ball polishing is so languidly erotic it’s impossible to hurry. Only by being promised to be left alone with the ball during drinks breaks were we ever able to get the overs bowled. Good luck to the happy couple, she’s a lucky girl. Not quite time to set about 232 yet, still one chase to come. That chase came on foot after our spectacle-less, horse-riding chum pursued a BMW after an attempted dog murder/hit and run. Don’t ask. Off we go. We came in hot!!! Oli P and Amogh eased to 50 at 11 an over. When Oli holed out there was a brief cameo from Ritwik (on his wedding anniversary) and an even briefer one from ‘smash and dash kash’. K.R.E.A.M. It soon became evident that if we were going to do this Amogh would have to stay in. That became even more evident after a hat trick of clean bowleds saw Bone and McGurk depart for golden ducks! Ajay strolled out as confident as ever and while we all laughed about how many balls his duck would take he smashed a drive through cover. Hang on a bloody minute. So confident was Beedle in the big man he never even bothered to pad up. Amogh brought up his ton and the celebration was muted, still a bit to be done. He eventually finished on 120* ably supported by Ajay 24* for a partnership of 80. A superb innings in which not a single chance was given. Things could’ve been so different. Had the late call up not come rumours were Amogh had a day shopping for pots and pans with the missus planned. The oppo were fantastic, it was a great day played in the right spirit ended in the pub. They even brought us a jug. That’s four in a row for the 2’s, a win forged on an artificial pitch in the ‘Garden of a kings side-chick’. MOTM- Amogh Bendre |
