Omnia bona veniunt ad finem…… is something that Rob Taylor might say at a time like this…but seeing as most of us aren’t that clever (or, to quote Blockwell…..A Virgin!) I will just say it in the queens…. All good things come to an end. Even fairly average things that weren’t nearly as good as last year…come to an end… And so it was on Sunday 30th September. ‘THE DECLINE’, The difficult ‘second album’ by ‘Brooksey and the MSPGA’s all inclusive band’ was ALMOST in the can (as it were)… One more track needed to be penned to complement our play list. We were unsure at the start of the day whether it would be entitled ‘The Damp Squib’ or ‘The Glorious last Hurruh’. Time would tell. We had lost an interminably boring game to the same oppo, (The Bricklayers Arms) in August that was littered with fielding errors, drops and the inevitable Putney batting collapse. However today could be different. MPSGA boasted a side full of promise…and Saturday players…and Mark Smith….(is that the same thing? I can’t decide). And….we had a new skipper..(well old really), no Brookesque ‘scatter’ instruction to the fielders today!… Wibberley actually set a field as we trundled out after losing the toss. Wibbs was full of surprises and innovation startling everyone by deciding to open up the bowling with Hogarth in a side that boasted SMITH and GOOD (in fact that was about it in terms of bowlers….Soham bowled his now customary two overs before complaining of a poorly shoulder). The opening ten overs looked something akin to proper cricket. Hogarth at one end and Smith at the other bowling tight lines, swinging and seaming deliveries and generally being miserly with the runs. The oppo struggled and the opening pair picked up 5 wickets between them (Smith 3 for 14, Hogarth 2 for 24). Hannaprod even got a catch! Cricket is a cruel mistress and you don’t always get what you deserve and this was beautifully played out when Saturday 1st stalwart Good stepped up to bowl. He got tonked to all parts. The various part time dibbly dobblers (JJ, Rohit, Ollie) who bowled at the other end kept picking up wickets with filth, whilst poor old Scott plugged away, good length, good line, good pace..and got smashed into the nearby gardens….He did grab a super (lucky) armpit catch though! One of their chaps hit a ton before they were all out for 180ish…the highlight of the innings being Smiths atrocious effort at a run out, lobbing the ball some 40 metres over the bowlers head when a trot to the stumps would have done the job… Tea by Wibbs…..Nice! What we lacked in bowling we more than made up for in batting. 2 ton Wibbs (78..his score not his age!) opened with 1000 runs a season Amogh (18), Karan followed with a very quick 4 before Jamola took up where he left off last time with a swashbuckling 54* ably assisted by Ollie D (10*) to finish off the Bricklayers with overs to spare… We cleared up the ground for the final time before repairing to the bar where a desperate search for that wanton bitch that we all love and desire, proved fruitless… JJ got MoM Smith got DDJ (THAT ORBITAL RUN OUT) Thanks for coming Soham (go get that shoulder looked at big fella) Champagne moment…….can’t really remember but could have been Scott’s catch… We then preceded to drink too much and ended up (Hoagy, JJ, Smith, Sud) in the Spencer arguing about Brexit, Boris and who was the worst cricketer (I won that last argument!) Anyhow…the season is over and the album is complete. In truth it was never going to reach the heights or get the acclaim of the first MPSGA disc. That was just one of a kind…….OR WAS IT??? Full playlist 1. Two little girls (are playing for our team) 2. The king is dead (well playing Saturdays) 3. AN a MPSGA PIE 4. Help me make it through the gate (Orr’s dilemma) 5. You win again ( the opposition) 6. He said Captain, I said what? He said Captain, I said what? He said Captain, I said what d’you want…he said I’d just like a fielding position please! 7.
