When Betty moved to Cheltenham in 1986 she had completed 50 years continuous association with Putney Cricket Club, having first became involved with the Club in 1936 when her husband Bert Thornley joined.
Betty was always there supporting Bert in every way in the various offices he held in the Cub. She was always ready to help with teas and during the time that Bert captained the 2nd XI she was on tea duty at every home game and her home made meringues and treacle tarts were always very popular with players. When she was not in the pavilion on tea duty. she could be found keeping score, passing this skill to her daughter Valerie.
During the time that Bert was Chairman of the Club he took a keen interest in the Colts Section and was delighted to see it thriving. He always felt that the Colts provided the players of the future in the Club. He would often be seen at their mid week matches, when, of course, Betty was by his side in support.
Although she moved away from London to the Cotswolds, Betty always kept a keen eye on the progress of the Club right up until her death.
