It was all going so well when Hensh and Wibbers were at the crease but they fell within a few balls of each other, Doug and Joe also fell cheaply and so 120-3, going like a train, became a rather sorry 140-7. Only Saad's fine 44 helped us get maximum batting points but at least Brian got off the mark. 180ao never felt like enough and we lacked sufficient early control to build any pressure that would bring wickets. In fact, they rather cruised to win by seven wickets with plenty in the tank, even after a parsimonious 10 over spell of 1-25 by Mike. No bowler got carted and we subsided meekly in the end. Which was the worst part of it. Not much was left untried, othordox fields, unorthodox, "mind" games, chat. We were just 60 runs short of a decent total. No blame on Saad (44), Hensh (28, time to crack that glass ceiling!) and Mark (an awesome 55 off 37 balls, 5x6, 3x4; boom!). It was, however, a particular pleasure to have Shiraz back in the side. The club owes him a lot for the difference he made when our fortunes were at a lower ebb a decade ago. It is not often he's been caught at silly mid off playing defensively! |
