It was a beautiful day for cricket. If only we could play it for two consecutive innings. The weather was fine. Yours truly was running “fashionably late” after a two hour struggle to make it to the ground and getting off at the wrong station. I was of course upstaged by Shins who was not only later than me but was again sporting the unbuttoned white shirt with the pendant (It’s enough to make a lady go weak at the knees… or shins!) For once there was no incredible hangover just a case of exhaustion from our beloved World Cup hitting the screens. I joined the field and to my surprise we had decided to bowl first even though we didn’t yet have a full team due to tardiness (Interesting call skip!). By the time I had made a grand entrance we already had the gentleman of Woodlawn CC one down thanks to the consistent and marvellous bowling by one Bailey Newland. We soon had them two down with Bailey again proving to be #thedifference in what would prove to be a great bowling display by the young man. The fielding was relatively tight and we had them ticking over at a respectable 3.5 runs per over. All seemed well until a rocket of a throw from a short square leg from Connor smashed the keepers finger. It was apparent that we had a broken boner (pun intended). Mr Warner then came on to bowl into the wind relieving Willow from his opening duties and after a dropped catch two more wickets followed in quick succession. One bowled one LBW. It was looking like we were going to have a good day in the field. Of course, in Putney Sunday 2’s fashion. The wheels started to come off. Woodlawn had then decided to remember how to bat and although Bailey and Srinath bowled well we just couldn’t contain the runs partly due to some poor fielding and partly due to some extra gaps in the field vacated by our wicket keeper who was ably replaced by Sourabh who proved to be a more than handy (if reluctant) substitute keeper. The tail eventually wagged and it seemed we were conspiring against Bailey to prevent him getting a five-for as the fielding deteriorated and we were eventually left chasing 177 for victory when in reality it should have been a lot less. The Batting.. (Or lack thereof!) So the batting was opened by yours truly and Sourabh due to our normal top three batsmen being notable in their absence and after a positive 6 runs off the first over he then chipped a simple catch to mid-on and we were one down after the first over. Warner was out for 8 (Did I mention I played a glorious cut shot?), Brooksy then made a golden duck (He made the same amount of runs as he took wickets!) and the rest of the batting was quite poor at best except for some entertainment from Srinath with his casual walking halfway up the pitch and some interesting side to side movement collated with some fantastic boundary hitting. The only other highlight was Boner coming out to bat one handed (and using beer as an analgesic -- on doctors orders apparently!) and scoring a respectable 3 not out which will no doubt prove to be one of his finer batting performances of the season. All in all a heavy loss out on the pitch which was only made up by us winning at drinking in the pub afterwards with a solid effort from Bone, Brooks, Warner and Toseland. Looking forward to next week in the hope of recording a much needed victory. |
