It's always good to start the season with a win, and thankfully we got a hard-earned result through our bowling after some batting struggles. After losing the toss we got put in, Doug & Saad starting off well with a partnership of 49 - Doug (35) in particular driving well through the off-side. After Saad departed for a scratchy 17, Parshav strode in and was aggressive from the outset. Another strong partnership and things were looking rosy at 1/89 in the 21st over. A 200+ total definitely on the cards. But this is Putney cricket (and something we need to address!). We collapsed, losing 5/8 in the space of 5 overs. Their change bowler kept it simple, stump-to-stump and a return of 5 wickets for no runs in 13 balls including a hat-trick meant we were up against it. New recruit Will kept a calm head and settled things with Parshav (28), then Karan contributed a useful 26 not out to drag us to 152 all out. A tough pitch to bat on, and early wickets would put pressure on them. Despite some good bowling from our openers and change bowlers, they nicked and bashed their way to 0/60 by the 20th over. A bunch of half chances could've had us well in control but it was hard work. We stuck to the task, and runs dried up again as Will Gunton hit some rhythm, finally breaking the stand. It was a crucial spell and certainly brought us back into the game, he finished with 2/12 off his 9 overs. That pressure showed at the other end, as Saad made use of the older ball and tore through the middle order. His 4 wickets putting us well in control, and they slumped to 7/90-odd while the required run rate continued to increase. A short spell from myself and a return for Brian at the other end resulted in 2 wickets apiece, Esher all out 116 and 20 points in the bag. A good spirited game and look forward to the return fixture. It was pleasing that despite our trials with the bat, our bowling stepped up and the strangling pressure paid off. I thought the pressure Will built off his spell was telling, but for 4 wickets Saad was motm. |
