It was back to winning ways, and a somewhat clinical performance. Friday night was sleepless, and Saturday morning restless as I waited for the inevitable call from Piers about the latest round of cry-offs....but it never came. And for probably the first time this season we turned out as selected. The cricket gods were smiling and even granted me the benefit of winning the toss (after losing 6 in a row). The decision was easy - bowl, and we did. After a ripping spell last week, Rolf opened up and was pace, bounce and venom while Macca also troubled both openers early. They were clearly their best 2 bats and we had them in the shed before the total was 10 - happy days! A brief partnership was ended by Tush as Macca dived acrobatically* at cover to snaffle a good catch. Rolf not to be outdone, also took a ripper running in from fine leg then continued his fantastic spell - another 2 quick ones to rip their batting lineup apart. Final figures were brilliant: 10-6-20-3. It set the tone for the game and set up the win. A brief rally from the tail took advantage of some untidy bowling from Brian, although he did recover from being belted around the ground by a 12 year old to finish with a good caught and bowled. That man Merchant couldn’t stay out of the game with an excellent runout, and the skipper also taking a swirling high catch running back. They were all out 144 although we probably should’ve had them for not much more than 100. Some excellent catching - we took the tough ones - but also put a couple down. Swings and roundabouts I guess. With 62 overs to chase, we didn’t have the best start as Doug’s form continued to desert him and departed for no score (cricket the great leveler!) . But Julian (35) and Saad (75) ground down the opposition’s challenging attack and we ebbed toward 61/1 after 23 overs. But Saad awoke from the great slumber and the run rate picked up, as did his timing (eventually). A 113 run partnership essentially sealed the victory, and Neil knocked a few strong shots about as we passed them in 39 overs. Great win, and great effort by all. Despite Saad’s 75 to anchor up our chase, MOTM is Rolf for setting the tone in our bowling and fielding and tearing through a top order which has done quite well this season. (*more a slow-motion fall - I’m sure Dez was calling ‘timber’ on the sidelines) |
