The Sunday 1s travelled to Hook and Southborough with high hopes of maintaining Cap'n Ship's 100% start. The Skipper won the toss and elected to take the new ball on a very green pitch. The opening bowlers, clearly happy to have their hands on the new cherry, got to work right away. Ash (7-2-13-2) and the returning Jon(8-1-24-1) finding plenty of movement and showing little early-season rust kept the score down before making early breakthroughs. The first changes were equally effective despite dropped catches, MOTM Chris (7-3-10-2) keeping things tight despite two dropped chances cleaned up both reprieved batsman to ensure we weren't punished. Faisal (3-1-15-0) struggled with his line (and Barry went for a wander), resulting in an illegal field as Ship attempted to give the part-time keepers some cover. Before Barry (4-1-15-1) made amends for his positional blunder with 4 tight overs while continuing his knack of getting a wicket in his first over. Ship (2-1-5-1) and Dave Almond (5-0-11-1) bowled tidily and Luke (2-0-10-1) weighed in with a wicket before Ship decided to put the opposition out of their misery, Ash needing only one ball to remove the last man. With a target of 120 Putney should have had an easy chase, three an over the paltry required rate. It has been suggested that the rest of the report should be replaced by a sheet of toilet paper. Clearly, thoughts of an early finish were too prominent as a succession of reckless shots accounted for our top order. Until Luke at 6 (15) knocked it about no batsman got into double figures. Shipar highlighted the Ill-discipline of his charges by notching up 26 on one arm and one leg! All out for 86, Putney proved catches don't always matches, runs do, and a batting improvement must be top of the agenda. |
