"Pete Townsend, Dame Nannette de Valois, Zac Goldsmith, can you hear me, your boys took one hell of a beating". That is what they were saying as we totally crushed the nine old men and boys of Richmond who had the misfortune to take on the might of our Sunday XI. How we relished breaking hearts in the same way that Finchley did ours only the other week. How good did it feel that our batsmen retired once reaching fifty, out of sympathy for the oppo. It wasn't that Richmond ever threw in the towel, more that we did for them. Not once but four times, Tushar a hundred, fifties for Wibbers, Sam Comery and Paul Hogarth. To be fair, though we lent them a fielder, they stuck to their task uncomplainingly in the field, our lightening quick outfield. We set off at ten an over and literally never stopped. Charlie brushed aside all thoughts of declaring at 300 off 30 overs. He smacked 28* and Tom Cartlidge 37. 379-4 off 40 overs. You can imagine the horrors of their bowling figures. Charlie went for ten off the first over but Barry set the tone with his first four balls: wide wicket wide wicket. Would another wicket count as a hattrick? Whatever. It went for four. dot dot wicket. An over to remember. Then a wicket in his next over - a career best beckoned and he indeed got five, a couple of nice catches by Charlie. But they were poor. Albert, their skipper, could bat; a stumped toothed man mountain, he had decent timing but so overweight he could only shuffle the singles. He carried his bat for forty overs for his not out fifty but he was out-scored by extras, 25 wides, 18 no balls as the umpires saw fit to have the T20 interpretation. No wonder we were still bowling at ten to eight. Our players drifted off before the end: Sam had to play a gig on the High Street, Leon had to go to the Opera in Covent Garden (he was run out for 0 off his first ball, thanks for coming!). As we were one short to begin with, we were now fielding the last 20 overs with only eight men! Wibbers bowled the last over of the day, just the one wide. Sunday cricket, bloody hell. |
