Ship our skipper elected to field having won the toss guessing, “Might we take advantage of a springy pitch and bowl out the Wanderers batting side?” Indeed we did and Connor boom-boom cleaning up. Connor’s two final wicket balls showed how intrepid the choice to field was because we had made a good job of cleaning up and the opposition faded faster than Connor’s effortless straight line and lazy pitch. In between David Almond did his job as opener setting up with a tight couple of overs, the skipper ‘Ship’ admirably pinning down the batsmen from the other end. A wicket was bound to come and indeed the first bats end came, a catch too, played up in the air off Dave’s powerful beamer. Shipar gave his to vice-skip Charles Smulian, the first change, who soon found some chances coming, the ball ripping tantalisingly over the slip cordon. Dave picked up a second wicket and after eight overs in came Barry at his end to give us a confident display of spin, flirting with the middle and leg stumps to complete the most economical spell of the innings. With Ali Amar bowling the leg breaks and off breaks combined meant wickets began to tumble, three wickets for him and Ed ‘Forrest’ Forrester helped himself to three, replacing Barry ‘Wandgas’ Perinparaja, bringing some exaggerated warm up exercises to bear on his left arm swingers. Which only left Connor to close it out. Fielding was tight, a good catch from Charles, brave and attractive wicket keeping by Karan, strong throwing from Charles and David particularly around cow corner, a good effort all round it seemed and not a lot in the way of fumbles. After tea Jamie Grieg and Ali Amar set us up with impressive displays of shots driving down the pitch and finding more long boundaries. Fours and run chases were the order of the afternoon. Never once looking in danger of losing their wickets, it was clever catching and some good captaining which brought their innings’ end but not before setting us up with a steady chase. Devon Eberson never got going unfortunately, but Karan showed some good form, playing shots until bizarrely dashing down the ground, looking to hit one back to the clubhouse I feel. Connor scored a commendable 29 not out, driving his first ball over mid-off and increasing his range as their total came in range and, with Charles now in the crease, we reached the desired total and finished the day early. |
