An enjoyable game against a good bunch at Old Woking. It was a trip down the A3 for this last minute fixture - a warm up for the league season which starts next week. A mixture of known faces and a few unknown, and a new skipper at the helm. There’s 2 very well known 'cricket-isms' I want us to follow this year: (1) Hold our catches (2) Partnerships We failed on one, but not on the other…..no surprises which way around it was. We won the toss and put them, and Rolf and new boy John Simmonds opened up to mixed fortunes. Rolf’s first spell was ‘interesting’: spanked in his first over bowling short and wide, a few gems, and a bucketload of wides. After a nervy start, John found his rhythm getting 2 wickets and bowled through for an excellent 2-12 off his 8 overs. Rolf’s second spell was much better, dismissing their top-scorer, and finished with 1-45 off his allotted. Next week won’t be as forgiving and the 21 wides (3 to the boundary) must be addressed. Just as they were building a decent total we tightened things up again, skipper getting 1 and Saad running through the lower and finishing with 4-39. Biggest disappointment was our catching – we put down 6, not a tough one amongst them. Only one catch taken off the last ball of the innings (skip leading by example). It was a warm up game so we weren’t punished, but next week it will cost dearly. The target was 185 to win off our 40 overs, and the chase was much better. Saad & Doug getting us off to a great start with a partnership of 87. Both looking good with the bat against some average bowling. A flurry of wickets left us at 3-93, but the old men Hensh (29*) & Hogarth (47) combined to put on 88 and within a shot of victory. Nerves got the better of Paul missing a slow straight one off a 14 year old bowling Chris Powell ‘express’ seamers. Connor came in to finish it, and promptly put the kid on a hat-trick with a disgraceful cross-bat heave. But sanity finally prevailed and got the target with 4 overs in hand. The 2 good partnerships doing the job. A good warm up for the league next week, but come selection time I’ll be looking for any player that can catch a cricket-ball |
