Our annual trip to Slinfold again produced a fantastic game of cricket to which everyone who made the trip contributed. Those who got few runs held important catches, the wickets were spread around and there were several important batting partnerships. Last year, we chased 280 to win so only knocking out 206 runs looked a bit light on a ground that leaks runs. The pendulum swung but ultimately we had that bit of luck that pushed it our way. Things were looking a bit uncle dick at 26-3 off only 6.2 overs, blobs for Saad and Owen. But Macca (36) had a few runs in him, often over the slips; but 67-5 off 12 was no less perilous. From here, Parshav and Neil Conquest combined, more than doubling the score in only 12 overs. Neil was more circumspect, 25 off 43 balls, pushing it around chancelessly here and there. Parshav really motored, with a run a ball 58, all left elbow, 9 fours, most crowd-pleasing. Dev, 27* took us home too a decent score, 6 off the last ball. Charlie took the first over leaking 12 runs but taking a wicket. All wickets are good, even ones this ugly. Kind of. Brian came to the party, Chuck took a second and it was their turn to teeter: 25-3. A sound 50 partnership had us looking anxious despite Macca and Chinny combining for a really tight spell in whch they scored only 40 in ten overs - amazing given the carnage elsewhere. Macca is really bowling much better now he has worked on his run up (GP - you are never too old to change!). But their overseas player stepped up a gear. His 48 runs off 63 balls became 98 off 89 balls, in a flurry of fine shots. They now needed 15 off 14 balls. We were on the ropes. An on drive was boundary-bound but only clattered into the non striker for a dot ball. The next ball was skied to long off where Owen held on. 15 off 12 now looked defendable, and so it proved as Brian (2-36) and Charlie (3-30) cleaned up,Parshav taking the final catch in the deep. A great day, a few beers in the sun afterwards. Who would not want to play this one next year? |
