The day began with an exploratory journey to Barnes common, through dense woodland. It felt like a trip into the unknown, a little like the Putney team, which had more debutants than established players. After winning the toss, Skipper Shipar decided to bowl. It proved a good decision as new players Ahmed and Tarek made an accurate start, and restricted Barnes. Some aggressive bowling saw one of the Barnes batsmen retired hurt for 0, after a steeply rising delivery. His partner soon followed, dismissed by a diving catch by Ockwell at mid wicket. Nabel and Malik continued the good work, keeping Barnes is check. However, following the dismissal of three more batsmen, Barnes built a formidable partnership of 150, with some huge sixes ruining the Putney bowling figures. At the midway stage Barnes had posted an impressive 253 from their 35 overs. It was clear that Putney had a mountain to climb, especially with only 9 batsmen. Things did not get off to a good start, losing two wickets cheaply. However, Ockwell and Shipar steadied the ship, and built a good partnership, scoring quickly. Good off spin removed Shipar, and again two wickets fell in quick succession. Enter long established Putney player Perinparaja who read the situation well, and occupied the crease, allowing Ockwell to send the Barnes fielders to look for balls in the surrounding trees. Not to be outdone Perinparaja also hit a number of lusty blows. However, the run rate soon climbed too high, and Ockwell was eventually caught for 91. A few final boundaries from Nabeel proved not enough, Barnes Common emerged victorious by 50 runs. |
