Sunday dawned and promised good weather. An hour before departure we had one casualty, Saturday Centurian Sam was out. Up stepped newbie Rob Close. A short trip down the A3 to Hook & Southborough and we were set. Your skipper lost the toss, and they chose to bat, but what a good toss to lose. New ball pair of Ajay and Mark Smith bowled a tight line, with only the occasional short one sitting up to get the treatment. Ajay in particular was finding some venom off a length, warming up the openers forearm and elbow a few times. Ajay 5-1-14-1 and Mark 5.5-2-12-3 set the standard that the following bowlers met. With H&S finding the fielders more often than not, they plodded along at just over 2 and over. Andy and Nitin joined the attack. Andy 5-0-12-1 getting some gentle shape and Nitin 6-1-7-1 slinging in with a bit more pace tested the middle order with many played at and missed. Their opener Milton was stubborn (20 – top score) hung around while wickets tumbled about him. We were wary of their no’s 3, 4, 5 and 6, but unduly so. They promised much but delivered little, contributing 29 together, picking runs off short balls and full tosses. Simon, in attempting a catch at mid-wicket did some serious damage to a little finger and after a short off field break returned to pull off a great diving catch, only to inflict further pain on himself – proper Sunday cricket! Turning to spin, Rob Close and Alex bowled tightly with the lower order now realising a heave was required to set a defendable target. Rob ending on 7-0-25-3 and Alex 7-2-8-1. With the noose starting to tighten, Nitin and Smith were tasked to polish off the tailenders. Smith completing a fine spell with 2 in 2. They ended on 78 all out off 35.5 overs. There skipper apologised. We dropped 6 catches, 4 of which would be classed as very difficult. Newbie Rob threw himself about to turn those difficult ones into chances, and we are grateful for his £3 contribution to the end of season Drinks Pot. After a fine tea sitting on the outfield in glorious sunshine, openers Parshav (aka Usain Bolt) and Rob strode out to face the rapid Imran and the slow Lorberg. After a few boundaries Parshav (12) succumbed to Imran having his stumps rearranged. Rob, on the other hand somehow managed to keep up the other end for 7 overs and scored freely, his first 8 scoring shots all boundaries. We were well ahead of the curve. With Seb (8), another Imran yorker victim, and Wibbers (9) feathering one to the keepers gloves off the slow Dainty, it was left to Rob (44*) and Connor (4*) to finish it off in 14.5 overs. With post-match drinks from the modified shipping container clubhouse in hand we set about the all- important DDJ, MOTM and The Make Putney Sundays Great Again (Formerly Known As Champagne Moment) Sunday Thunder Bitch Moment Of The Day vote. MOTM – Mark Smith for great bowling spell. DDJ – It’s always good to hand a newbie the DDJ moment. Attempting to bowl a quicker one, Rob released the ball a little late, pitching it almost on his toes with the ball dribbling limply to a halt about half way down and off the pitch, a delivery which perplexed the Umpire who wasn’t sure whether to call no ball, dead ball, wide, or combination of all 3! The delivery defied description. T.M.P.S.G.A.F.K.A.C.M.S.T.B.M.O.T.D. – Rob Close for his catching efforts and some great batting. A great bunch of opposition guys and we look forward to hosting H&S at Putney in September in the return fixture. I am (alledgedly) often premature, but yesterday PCC Sundays WAS MADE GREAT AGAIN!
