The skippers got together for a chat and a 30-over game was agreed, with Barnes winning the toss and batting first. They started with intent, moving down the track at every opportunity, looking to hit the ball straight. Tight bowling saw wickets fall steadily, with Hogarth (3-36) and the hissing debutant Pleming (1-34) taking crucial wickets to stem the runs. Barnes finished their overs on 246-6 and Putney came out to bat with drizzle starting to fall. Putney lost 3 early wickets, and when Hogarth joined Fremlin-Key at the crease Barnes were feeling confident. 177 runs later - a club 3rd wicket record partnership - (Hogarth - 58, Fremlin-Key - 123) and the momentum was firmly with Putney. Consistent rain and many ground strokes made fielding more difficult by the ball, and this was to prove decisive. Misfields came almost ball-by- ball and with 11 needed off the final over the game was very much in the balance. 4 was needed off the final ball, Seb spooned the ball over cover for what looked like 2, but the ball went through 3 different fielders hands and with buzzers 4 runs were scampered for an unlikely victory. One of the great chases with the required run rate in double figures from around the 12th over. Tea was taken after the game and both sides sat around analysing what had just happened, and warming up away from the elements. A truly remarkable game fought to the bitter end. |
