Bam Bam reclaims mojo and propels Putney to victory ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tight bowling and two accomplished batting displays handed Putney their first league win of the season. Skipper Ebersohn won the toss and elected to bowl first. Ben “Surrey” Williamson and Sam Furber opened proceedings for the home side. Disciplined bowling limited Ewhurst’s scoring in the first twelve overs. With runs at a premium, Ewhurst’s no. 2 decided to tee off with several agricultural heaves towards cow corner, but was soon dismissed by Travis Pyke. Saad “The Badger” Hannan soon entered the fray. In a remarkable, uncharacteristic turn of events, The Badger wasn’t hit for six in his first over. Unfortunately, his fielding was anything but uncharacteristic, with several drops blemishing an otherwise dogged fielding display from the home side. The Badger did dismiss Ewhurst’s no. 1, and even managed to hold a catch. Yet it was Surrey’s second spell and Vish Chandrasekhar’s leg spin that did the real damage. The duo clinically removed Ewhurst’s middle order, with Vish departing the field with three wickets to his name, and Surrey with two. Ewhurst scored 131, and after a swift tea break, Putney set about chasing the total down. With Skipper Ebershon urging patience, Piers Jackson began his innings by launching several shots over the covers. Jackson was eventually undone by his own eagerness – spooning one skywards. Meanwhile, at the other end, Andy Hyland chipped away at Ewhurst’s total with several twos and a handful of boundaries. Putney’s no. 3 Furber played himself in, but after engaging in debate with the away side’s opening bowler, soon found himself heading back the pavilion – dismissed by the very same bowler. As Hyland worked towards his half century, big-hitter Damandeep “Bam Bam” Singh headed to the middle. Many had presumed that Bam Bam’s days of big-hitting had passed into legend and that he had “lost his mojo”. In the film, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin rediscovers his mojo after saving planet Earth from an attack from a giant laser based on the Moon. Thankfully, Bam Bam did not require a hazardous space mission to rediscover his mojo. Instead, he plundered the bowling of Ewhurst’s first, second and third changes to smash a half century off 39 balls. Bam Bam ended the match on 54* and his innings, combined with Hyland’s eventual 43, secured Putney’s first league victory of the season. |
