Our arrival at Woodmansterne was greeted with a downpour – an omen for the afternoon’s proceedings. Skipper Devon Ebersohn lost his first toss of the season and Woodmansterne elected Putney to bat first. Openers Piers Jackson and Andy Hyland were the first to discover what a week of constant showers had done to the wicket. The playing surface was a bowler’s paradise – no two balls were the same, and runs were notoriously hard to come by. Jackson fell early, caught by gully, and no. 3 Jon Todd set about the task of building Putney’s total. Todd played the conditions superbly. He ruthlessly punished the short ball, pulling the home side’s opening bowlers for four on several occasions. Todd and Hyland combined for a 44-ball partnership before the former fell to the match’s first bowling change, mistiming his shot, which fell into the hands of mid-on. Ebersohn came in a no. 4 and persevered at the crease, grinding out singles and twos whenever the opportunity presented itself. In the middle order, Bam Bam and Ebersohn combined for a 27-run partnership – vital runs on a tricky wicket. But it was a partnership nearer to the bottom of the order that frustrated the home side’s bowling attack. Gary Peters and Ben “Surrey” Williamson piled on the runs to take Putney past the 130 mark, with the away side eventually finishing with 138. Having been on the receiving end of such a difficult wicket, Peters and Surrey were keen to get proceedings underway. Both got the ball moving, popping and cutting off the pitch. The pair bowled five maidens between them in the first 10 overs as Woodmansterne limped to 14-1. The duo bowled the first 18 overs between them, leaving the home side on 39-3. First change Lewis Hill entered the fray and kept one end occupied while Vish Chandrasekhar and Saad “The Badger” Hannan did the damage at the other end. Both bowled admirably, but it was The Badger who earned the plaudits. Some tidy lines meant the away’s side batsmen could neither pull The Badger, nor penetrate Putney’s tight inner ring (a new addition to the league rules this year). Despite the home side requiring 15 runs from the last four overs with just one wicket left, the match came to a climax quickly as Woodmansterne reached the required total with an over to spare. |
