Putney recovered from our worst session of fielding since Gymkhana’s assault at the start of the season to play out a stale draw against Ewell. Sent into field, Putney’s first 15 overs were characterised by several blunders. Notably, Vish Chandrasekhar parrying a ball in the slips into Andy Hyland’s face off my bowling, and my own misjudgment of a routine catch off Piers Jackson’s bowling at deep mid-off. This allowed Ewell’s opening bat to accelerate to his half century inside the first twenty overs. After toiling away, Ben “Surrey” Williamson managed to remove the other half of the opening partnership, who sent a loose shot skywards and into my hands at mid-off. Despite this wicket, Ewell had amassed nearly 100 runs in just over 15 overs. Following a stern word in the drinks interval from skipper Devon Ebersohn, things immediately started to turn around. Gary Peters and Vish steadied the ship with some fine bowling, with Peters removing Ewell’s danger man at the top of the order with a sharp delivery outside off which he nicked behind, straight into Ebersohn’s gloves. However, Ewell’s no. 3 picked up the mantel and started to find gaps in the field to register several boundaries in quick succession. He batted the rest of the innings and ended up on 87*.Vish’s dogged bowling display at one end earned him three wickets, with two LBW shouts removing the home side’s middle order, before he clean bowled one of Ewell’s tail enders. A couple of run outs, courtesy of myself and Rich Jeffries rounded off the wickets but a poor first session had cost Putney, with the home side posting 235-8 off 50 overs. Putney were on for an aggressive run chase, but the home side’s defensive tactics deflated any real hope of amassing 200+ runs to win the match. Starting with two spinners and five men on the boundary, Joe “Pork” Sworder and Rich had to work hard for their runs. Both played the spin well, but Pork came undone by Ewell’s canny leg spinner, who bowled the entire innings from one end. His forward defensive bounced up into the hands of silly point and he departed the field with 17 to his name. Jackson was next in and started quickly. He registered several boundaries, including a six over mid-wicket and a beautifully timed four off his legs. Combining nicely with Rich at the other end, who kept things ticking over, the duo put on a 40+ run partnership. The promising partnership was not to last – Jackson was bowled by the leg spinner and Jeffries soon followed after being caught at mid-on. Saad “The Vadger” Hannan and Hyland were left to stabilise Putney’s innings and prevent a fatal collapse. Both did their job admirably, but a side effect was an ever-increasing run rate. The Vadger soon fell to an LBW decision, but Hyland remained, scoring plenty of runs through the leg side. Oli Dudman joined Hyland at the crease and after some promising shots early doors, soon left the field having run himself out. Hyland soon followed Dudman – stumped off Ewell’s leg spinner who claimed a five-for. Ebersohn, Vish and Peters guided Putney to the finish line and the draw. A few takeways: • The above report is light on comedy. Bore draws aren’t fun, especially when the opposition actively pursues one with fielding positions as defensive as The Vadger is over his ridiculous shoes. • Rich finally proved to us that he can throw – clinically launching his bat against the changing room wall after his dismissal. He then resigned himself to some much-needed sympathy from his girlfriend, quote: “you did sooooo well!” • Surrey has started ranking the men of Putney CC. Tom Gasparre, congratulations, you’re top of the tree. Pork was understandably disappointed to be in bronze position. First the rankings, next the naked calendar. Watch this space. |
