A new season and a lot of expectation as we fielded 6 Putney debutants in the league. First up was a tricky away fixture against last year’s Div 2 champs. It was a good start as we won the toss and batted against some inconspicuous opening bowling - James Dunford solid and punishing the loose ball, Tom G still battling Friday night’s beer monster. After a few heaves the beer monster won and Tom limped back to curl up in a corner. Unfortunately James (19) followed soon after despite looking comfortable, leaving Amogh and Oliver Dudman to steady the ship at 32/2. A quality partnership blossomed with Ollie (44) in imperious form, dispatching to all parts. At the other end Amogh (35) racked up a few boundaries and even broke into a trot once while attempting a single (early candidate for the ‘Parshav Garg/Usain Bolt’ award). The partnership ended at 76 with both falling quickly, shortly followed by Tush and we were 116/5 wasting the good starts. Henry followed that trend and after looking comfortable was unnecessarily run out for 26, followed quickly by Abhisek (run out) and Chin (caught first ball). The 3 Chaldon spinners were making life tough and we certainly aided their cause. Charlie saved the innings with a great cameo of 34 and we finished all out 187 in the last over. A good start with the ball and we’d be in this. Their opening bat on about 3 skied one to slips, JP settling under it. 2 turns clockwise, 3 turns anti-clockwise. A pirouette and a flourish and down it went. That summed up Chin’s day with the ball as he served up a buffet of length balls which were dispatched by said opener over long on and cow corner (0/51 off 7). At the other end however, it was all about The Tush. With the new ball in hand he swung it both ways, generating pace and ripped through their top order. JP taking 2 one-handed screamers, and Charlie a ripper at 2nd slip. He finished his spell with 7-2-12-4 and changed the game. The skipper replaced the leaky ship Chintaka at the other end and stemmed the flow, removing the opener with a great catch from Tom out at midwicket, and finished with 26-4. Chaldon all out 108 in the 29th over. We book-ended some great catches and fielding with the early drop and some shockers from Amogh and Chin (a day to forget). Always great to start the season with a win, and MOTM was Tush for his game-changing spell of bowling. |
