After a strong win in Round 1, it was away again to a somewhat familiar foe in Wallington who had been relegated from the Premier division. An urgent message and late-night Friday cryoff proved pivotal in the end, with Sam ‘Bradman’ Sud getting a call up after his ton in the trial game and 90-odd against Reigate in the Sunday side (credit to him for responding late in the evening while he was “at some woman’s house in Putney”). Another strong side at the selection table and we were met with a mixture of the older and even older – even the presence of Doug and Julian couldn’t win us the average-age-sweepstakes. Skipper won the toss again and we batted, eager to take advantage of the aged bowling attack. But their opening bowler, back after a few years out, was sharp. Properly sharp! He made full use of the pitch with the ball lifting off a length past the nose and runs hard to come by. Jules played the Bart Simpson “I didn’t do it” card but Tush was having none of it, and the finger went up for smashing one through to the keeper first ball. Amogh swiped hard at a short wide one early which thundered into the fencing for 6. He was amped. Buzzing. Pumped…..and judgement-impaired…..nudged straight to cover and ran out Tom G by pitch length (we think it could be a personal vendetta – see below). Bradman wandered out to the middle looking for someone to chat to and was saved the task of facing their opener as Amogh weathered the storm and took plenty of deliveries on the gloves and body. He compiled a solid 26 but fell on the 2nd to last ball of the spell, the hard work done. The change bowlers came on, they had nothing, and the rest is history. With Charlie watching on at the other end, Bradman picked the length on nearly everything and peppered all of the boundaries. Anything short was pulled away, at one point clearing the high-netting by a good couple of metres. A partnership of 118 and he finally departed with the score on 175/4 and 113 to his name. Charlie, Doug and Tush provided a burst at the end and we finished on 256/7 off our 45 overs. It turns out we didn’t need Sam’s ton as we won by 115 runs. Regular wickets fell and they were never in the hunt. To their credit they batted out the 45 overs and finished on 141/8. 2 wickets each to the Tea Lady and Hensh. Tom G getting some overs to redeem his day and getting his first league wicket. Would’ve had 2 but for Amogh rubbing salt into the wound and dropping a sitter at mid-off. He couldn’t have sent a clearer message and the 2 had to be separated in the changeroom afterward. A spicy 2017 season to follow! MOTM could’ve gone to anyone. We really did look to give it to anyone. But Bradman gets it for his first league ton and a ridiculous start to the year – he’s now almost scoring runs as frequently as he talks. |
