In the end, Wallington clung on for a draw with their last pair holding out for nearly 3 overs and we were denied what would've been a fantastic win. All credit to their batting however we fell victim to a lost toss and a ridiculous rule change in 2017 to the timed game setup which meant even if we had declared 6-7 overs earlier we would still only have had 45 overs at them. After being sent in, our batting was probably the best performance in many years. Amogh and Abhilash putting on 114 for the first wicket, with the former in sensational touch. Straight bat, picking off the loose balls, and rarely beaten all day. Abhi fell for 49 (Amogh 47* at the time), which brought Tom Gasparre to the crease. He was coming off a lean run in the 1's (3 runs in 3 innings) and needing to find some form. A few loose shots and misses early but found his groove and the run rate accelerated - we were ticking along at 5 per over for the first 30 then 10 per over thereafter. Tom (108) smashed the bowling to all parts, bringing up his ton first have only batted 20 overs. A highlight being the 3 consecutive 6's against the number 4 bowler. Amogh followed shortly afterward, carrying his bat for 134* - a sensational performance. We batted the extra 7 overs which would've gone to waste in a declaration, piling on an extra 70 odd runs. We had a good bowling lineup and felt confident in getting through them. Brian struck in his first over and claimed 2 early wickets, but we put down 4 catches in the first 15 overs which would be costly. None were easy, but if we take 1 or 2 the game might've been ours. Some light showers made grip difficult for JP and the ball stopped swinging and it was tough going for a while. Time was running out but a bowling change to bring back Hugo immediately reaped rewards. His 2nd spell was fantastic and took us to within a wicket of victory. But we couldn't find that last breakthrough and missed the full points. It was a little deflating as I think we deserved more, but that is timed cricket unfortunately. Brilliant performances by Tom with the bat and Hugo with the ball, but Amogh is MOTM for anchoring the innings with a fine chance-less century. |
