The Secret Diary of a Putney Sundays Cricketer. Aged 46 and a quarter. Dear, Diary. Sunday May 13th was a strange day. We had most of the old (well, last year’s) team back together again and it was going to be like one big family reunion. Quite a dysfunctional family as it turned out… Wibbs and Sarab opened the batting. Wibbs, as ever, was our Jorah Mormont to Brooksey’s Daenerys Targaryen. Daenerys more beautiful, but Jorah good with sword in hand. And anyway, as far as looks goes, back in the day, who knows??? Sarab, an ever popular and much loved member of the team, won the “thanks for coming” award. If all goes well in the West Country next weekend, he may well win it again. Alex came in at three. He was in one of his sleeveless shirts for most of the day again. I think part of his new look involves shaving his armpits. Anyway, he’s still VIP at the Fez Club so not to worry. Justin batted at four, scored sixty runs and was excellent, deservedly winning him man of the match. But for every yin, there is a yang. Equally deservedly, he shared Dick du Jour with Paul. As usual, I was at deep fine leg (it’s funny how I always end up there) and couldn’t hear exactly what went on, but, the way I saw it, Justin must have had some invaluable fielding advice to give Paul and Paul was trying hard to return the favour with some bowling tips. They were both obviously super keen to help each other out as they were shouting this advice across the pitch at each other for quite some time. Captain Brook finally reminded them that there was a cricket match to play – DDJ fully earned. Whatever they said to each other must have been good because they were shaking hands and buying each other jugs afterwards. Jay, a newcomer to our Modern Family hit some nice shots to score 17 and looked athletic (everything’s relative) in the field. Paul H batted at six. He was super keen to make up for last week’s golden duck. And he definitely succeeded with a swashbuckling 11 before Justin ran him out. They were joking at tea that it was Justin’s revenge because Paul had run him out last year. Well, we all thought they were joking. That was until later. Paul and Justin are the first joint winners of the Dick du Jour award. Which is a lovely thing. On the upside, Paul’s re-re-invention of himself as a bowler seems to be going well, with a decent spell and a deserved wicket. Apart from consecutive sixes, but only two of them. He made a lovely speech in the bar afterwards, apologising for, amongst other things, our cricket. Which was entirely appropriate. Brooksey kept the run rate up with a lovely first ball duck. LBW but no argument from captain Ben. He more than made up for it later with the best bowling spell of the day. Apart from the opposition (obvs). Another relative newcomer next: Tom McGurk. Fresh from a man of the match winning “five-for” (shouldn’t they all be?) and sporting a very trendy undercut, he looked quite the part. Result: a quick-fire 27 runs. This looked like an important contribution. Until the oppo started batting, that is. Yours truly and James H finished things off with a muted nine run partnership. James was also our wicket keeper on the day fending off stiff competition for the gloves from Sarab, who sees this as a possible way to avoid the TFC award. Whilst the day was a smorgasbord of fortunes and emotions, the tea was truly wonderful. The piece de resistance being a pie which actually had “MPSGA PIE” written on it. Well done and many thanks to the Hogarth household. Champagne moment to the pie!!! Jason Beedle came and watched for a bit with Tiger, his canine friend. His main contribution (“allegedly”) was to leave a “doggy bag” on the pitch. Alex gingerly removed it only for a passing spectator to comment, after Sarab dropped another catch, “You might as well have thrown him that bag of s**t!” That spectator had a better day than most. At the end of a day like Sunday, remember, if we never experience the chill of a dark winter, it is very unlikely that we will ever cherish the warmth of a bright summer's day. Night night. |
