There was a feeling of relaxed optimism around the Putney team, as the majority of the squad arrived 10 minutes before the game started, ready to have a bat. However, in what would become a theme of the day, just as things appeared to be working out nicely, they didn’t quite work out as they should have. Brooksy lost the toss, and we were sent out to field by our visitors, the Lord Gnomes. Things started well. Exceptionally well. Hugo Flower’s tight lines meant that with the Gnomes, save for a few edges through third man (ABSOLUTELY NONE OF WHICH CARRIED TO JUSTIN OKAY?), struggled to score. Meanwhile from the other end Matt Proctor bowled fantastically – he would finish the day with 4-24. Wickets were tumbling and things appeared to be working out nicely. There was talk of having the Gnomes being out for 60. The Gnomes dug in a little, but two wickets a piece for Ben Brook and Gus Carnegie-Brown followed, and Putney stayed on top of their opposition. Things appeared to be working out nicely, even Hannaprod was producing a wicket keeping master class, showcasing a new found athleticism, (perhaps some credit should go to Truck Fist for motivational talks he has been providing behind the club house after games in recent weeks). But things didn’t work out quite as they should have. It was hard to pinpoint how, or when, but the Gnomes suddenly had 100 runs on the board… and then 150… and then 186 before they were eventually all bowled out. Puzzling. As puzzling as Brooksy’s decision not to bowl Alex, despite the fact that he had brought the whole Blockwell family to the game. Putney started their chase well. Wibbers (19) was batting like a man possessed before he middled one to square leg, and Hannaprod, was prodding better than ever. Blockwell, in at 3, and clearly trying to shake his new nickname, scored at a rate of knots. Things appeared to be working out nicely, even when Hannaprod fell to leave us 72-2. Still with Alex at the crease and playing a blinder (eventually making a very good 80), all the remaining 8 Putney batsman had to do was hold up an end and we would be home and dry! But things didn’t work out quite as they should have. Cue the Putney collapse. The 7 wickets that fell around Alex’s sterling effort fell for just 21, leaving Putney 40 short of their target. There were however some positives to come during the post-match beers – A very relaxed looking Hannaprod fixed a slightly wobbly table leg in the club house (??) and spirits were further buoyed when Sam ‘3 for 7’ Cornick arrived back from the away game to inform everyone repeatedly that he had taken 3 for 7. |
