Completely brilliant day of days in darkest Yorkshire against Upper Wharfdale. Their social media was greatly anticipating the game and it was all for which either side could've hoped. Hard track, fast outfield, not a cloud all day, barbecue warming up nicely. Both sides were very keen to give the best account of themselves. They batted first and GP and Hugo gave them nothing, one curmudgeonly the other parsimonious. Each picked up a wicket as the pressure told. Keen fielding by Alex set the standard. And throughout, we kept picking up wickets at important times. Paul Hogarth came back from a 16 run over with a 4-31 spell. Hensh did what he does best, Ben got some great carry bowling with the wind. And, lo, they were 144ao! Tight bowling, pressure fielding and not a single dropped catch. Hensh took 3 fine catches, GP one and Alex took the final one over his head at long off. A day of days and a tea of teas. Lemon drizzle cake and rocky road, interspersed with strawberry whipped cream scones. You had to have been there. Doug and Tush nicked off early, Saad top edged a hook to deep fine leg which left Dev and Sarab to repair the damage against some testing pace. Sarab played some pleasing drives whilst running coltishly. Dev kept the ball on the deck before Sarab, perhaps inevitably, ran himself out. Darren fell cheaply, Dev missed a straight one. 70-6 and squeaky bum time. But Alex and Dez both put in a shift. The fast opener returned and Alex, no long feasting on his usual Sunday buffet, was troubled. Tension rose as we inched forward. Dez was caught at cover, Alex yorked, Brooksey somehow pirouetted around a straight one. Could last pair Hensh and Hugo get the last dozen runs? Could Hensh ever find the gap instead of the fielder? A leg bye, a single, and then Mike was on strike to a bowler much faster then we normally get to face. A straight bat was determinedly presented and at last a wide half volley was put away with panache. The glory was all his! A brilliant day, tough competitive cricket played with a magnificent spirit with much beers after. This is why we came. |
