The start of an English summer is a wondrous time. Newborn lambs gambol in the fields, the wildflowers in the meadows bloom and “athletes” take to cricket fields, unencumbered by the crippling self-doubt and existential dread that will surely overwhelm them in the coming months, leaving them empty husks of men by September. Under leaden skies the skipper lost the toss and the Putney players were given the opportunity to gorge themselves at tea. A parsimonious opening spell from fake Doug (on dayboo) and the King of Sculling was rewarded with a classic run out. From then on it was hard work with inside edges just evading the stumps and play and misses unrewarded. Eventually Leon somehow got a slower ball bouncer through and Hogarth flattened middle stump. The pre-match watering paid off. Their no. 4 arrived at the crease and immediately looked quality. He went on to make a good 80 before being bowled. In the meantime two more dayboos, Ben and Yassar, had a good crack with the latter bowling superbly for 1-6. Leon bagged a second. All in all a good effort with particular mention to the committed fielding of some of the more 'experienced' members of the side – real Doug Shaw choosing to use everything but his hands (face, knees) to stop the ball. 211 to win. Intermission: Tea from Ollie Pilkington was magnificent, featuring two home-made cakes. Nominated for champagne moment. Surely the chase would start better than last week? It did! The openers were going well before Pilkington was dismissed by Leon Trigg-Orr. Hannaprod showed some uncharacteristic aggression until dangling his bat out for 20. Yassar and Jarmola batted excellently together each scoring 50s to keep Putney in with a shout of winning. However once Yas was out the rate appeared to be creeping out of reach until JJ smote 22 off the 36th over (the highlight being a tennis shot into the sight screen). The game was going our way with 30 required from 24 balls. But then disaster! Justin holed out and sloped off for a cigarette. It was left to the tail to bring it home. Brook and Hogarth hacked away superbly: 23 required off 18, 17 off 12 and then 8 off 6. Nerves were frayed, the crowd (singular) was at fever pitch. A single first up: 7 from 5. Four! Delightful swivel-pull down to fine leg. Then a two! We were favourites – surely we couldn’t mess this up now. 1 required from 3. Next ball a quick single and a shot of Thunderbitch. Never in doubt. We retired to Putney’s new hipster bar to quaff some craft beers and compare top-knots. The skipper of the less victorious Sunday 2s Bryon Beedle dropped in to inform us that 'crime is a big thing these days' - illuminating stuff. Game of Thrones this week was also ok. Thanks to Park Hill for an exciting game. TLDR: we won. Awards etc: Debuts: Ben, fake Doug, Yassar TFC: real Doug MOM: Yassar – bowled well, scored 50. Champagne moment: Hogy hitting the winning run. |
