Saturday the 8th of June saw Putney CC play host to Shepperton CC, the self-proclaimed guardians of the finest cricketing pastures on earth. Still aghast at the third-word conditions he was met by in South West London, the visiting skipper suffered his first defeat for the day and was promptly sent in to bat by Skipper-Hyland. GP started brightly and, in a sign of things to come, had no sooner created a genuine chance than was left standing hand on hips rueing a missed opportunity. For catch-avoidance please read Piers Jackson. An inspired bowling change by the skipper allowed Jackson to quickly atone for the earlier “incident” and had one opener caught in the covers and t’other snaffled in the slips by Dev’s midriff. Wickets 3 and 4 swiftly followed before the greedy front-toes of the Putney bowlers and flaccid hands of the fielders crept in, somewhat allowing Shepperton back in to the game. At 5/100 at the mid-way point it was anyone’s game for a short period. Scott and GP both bowled masterfully and on another day could have had 5 wickets each, the Kiwi sliding seamlessly in to the fiery, aggrieved-bowler role in the absence of one Lewis Hill. Chin bowled tightly and didn’t allow the opposition tail to wag; the final wicket being taken with the score at 155 and with a hysterical-thrashing coming from within the tree line at the “Gary Peters End”. The selection committee will keenly await the verdict of the “Putney Flora and Fauna Tribunal” this week to understand any potential sanction facing GP. Thanks again to those responsible for tea; it was warmly enjoyed by 11 of 22. In response, another inspired captaincy decision saw “Bam Bam” join “Jason Statham” at the top of the order and the two combined for a contrasting yet effective 82 run opening stand. “Bam Bam” raced to a typically clean hitting half-century, playing shots down the ground and over cover to great effect, much to the dismay of the opposition opening bowler and skipper. “Jason Statham” enjoyed a number of lives in his 40, employing the dab through the leg-side to great effect and was ultimately unlucky to be caught behind by perhaps the only one the opposition keeper took all day, albeit with his legs. Ockwell coolly steered the ship home to record a 5-wicket victory for Putney, striking the ball cleanly from the outset of his innings Winners’ beers were had and the Stockport boys delighted the evening-crowd with chip butties, a nice introduction to the PCC post-match festivities.
