Amidst the backdrop of Windsor Castle, eleven intrepid men strode out into the battlefield to face one of the most gruelling challenges that has faced inhabitants of this fine kingdom since records began – to shake away the winter cobwebs for the first game of the season and try to remember how to play cricket. Thankfully the Sunday 2nds were promised a weak opposition, a team of junior cricketers who we could intimidate and overpower with our superior set of skills. So, our debutant captain strode out for the toss and confident in our ability to bowl on the pitch, Beedle elected to field first. Our expectations were destroyed for two reasons: apparently, it is difficult to bowl on the pitch after a cold winter and our oppo were a bunch of Saturday 1 players. Nevertheless, a few decent deliveries on the stumps including a birthday wicket for Soham left us in with a shout. At 20 overs, they were 103-3 and talk of “let’s get them 120-6” and “keep them under 200” were abound. As ever, such chatter was in vain, as one of their Saturday pros proceeded to demolish our bowling attack. Even when we bowled it in the correct direction, the ball flew to the boundary with alarming regularity. Despite a fantastic first Putney catch from yours truly, a century from the aforementioned batter left us with an unlikely chase of 267. At times in history, a group of men have overcome insurmountable odds to achieve victory over their powerful foes: Agincourt; Rorke’s Drift; Cannae (that’s my token Classics reference!). Maybe our rag-tag team could perform such a feat. Alas, it was not to be, as their opening bowlers tore through our top order. A shining light of Adam “One-Shot” Sayer smashing the ball to the leg side boundary (even despite four fielders being posted there) gave us the possibility of a measure of respectability, but once Beedle and I were the only ones left, there was only going to be one result. All out for 74 and a harrowing defeat. Such a demolition would put off those of weaker constitutions. I have no doubt that the Putney faithful will relish the opportunity to give it another go next week! Champagne Moment: Rohit for donning the keeping-gloves and putting in a great shift MOTM: Sayer for his 34 and tight bowling DDJ: Ollie for bowling the ball backwards…twice Thanks for coming: Noman |
