Another bank holiday Monday morning spent nursing hangovers and turning up to the clubhouse slightly late, blaming bad traffic. You could be forgiven thinking that this was just like any other Sunday. This was, however – Something very different. This was a bank holiday Monday friendly with Sam Sud amongst the ranks. Low on confidence, we could all tell he needed an arm around his shoulder. The Skipper lead by example throughout the game showing us exactly how to deal with Sud’s self-doubting comments. I can only assume that when I saw Brook’s turn away from him with anger and frustration muttering, ‘Shut up Sam’ for the third time that he was so frustrated by Sud’s lack of self believe, he saw no option but to place him deep in the field to talk to Connor for 3 hours to try and boost his failing morale. Coming in at 3, Sud played some great strokes before being reaching the day’s maximum individual total of 50 runs. Walking back to the excellently erected gazebo, he mentioned that it’s ‘well known’ that certain professions such as policing are rife with ‘sexual fiend’s’. Hogarth, after 20 minutes of discussing how he would like to not umpire today, stood up and escaped to the bowlers end to umpire for some mental R&R. What had just happened? Was it all a dream? The cricket continued as the Putney batting line up put together a good score. One of their spin bowlers turned one so drastically that one of our colonial imports from a Place called ‘New Zealand’ said that he almost picked up his keys and drove back there. That didn’t stop the Putney onslaught as the runs kept coming. Notable innings coming from the versatile Jack, who at one point nearly hit the ball in the air, Sayer who at one point almost played a cricket shot, and Ajay who almost worked out which way he was meant to be running. All in all, Putney managed to put a respectable 239 on the board. Once the oppo graced the field, Sud was clearly low on confidence still and as he ran up to bowl his first ball, we all felt the worst for the young man. I can’t be sure on exactly what he said after the ball shot in to the keepers gloves, but I think it was ‘what a ball! Oh babyyyyyyyy, im getting GOOD!!!!’. We could all sense he needed words of encouragement or a hug. Sud continued to bowl well and got the wicket he deserved, even if he couldn’t sense that him self. As a couple more wickets were taken by the excellent, Skuller there was overconfidence overflowing from the field and talk about which ‘beer of the month’ they didn’t want to buy this week. With Sayer not having to go to work that evening it was going to be a big night of at least two beers. IDLCCC had seemingly reversed their batting order, with their left hander playing excellent shots putting them in a position of needing around 75 wins to win the match. On came Scott Good.. a fine bowler from a place near Australia I am told. Due to his ability to bowl at great pace for the Saturday 1st’s he opted to bowl spin to keep the spirit of the Sunday game intact. After getting hilariously spanked for 4 then 6 in consecutive balls, he then opted to bowl pace and along with Skuller.. they managed to clean up and ultimately win us the match. Hogarth bowled well picking up wickets. Brooks bowled well being unlucky not to pick up a wicket claiming fatigue from the weekends other games. Sayer bowled well being let down by Ajay, Ajay and Ajay in the field, ultimately picking up zero wickets and getting hit for 4 fours in a row. ‘Sayer bowled’ is probably the best way to put it actually. A fine day.. a competitive game as IDLCCC came within 40 runs to win. Honourable mentions and awards as follows: MOTM: Skuller - 4-13 including getting their top bat out TMPSGAFKACMSTBMOTD: Skuller - Getting hit in the bollocks TFC: Ajay - 0 wickets and 4 runs. Shocking in the field. DDJ: Ajay - The scoring debacle, misfielding debacle then offering bowling advice to Sayer next ball, and the Bambi impression when running |
