It's not that frequent to have a group of Putney players thrown together towards the end of June whereby three are new to the club and the captain having never led a conga line, let alone a team of finely tuned athletes, but such is the nature of cricket in a home World Cup year that this was the situation that presented itself to the Saturday "Occasional" 3rd XI for a game against Kensington and Chelsea. Beedle arrived a good hour early, such is his enthusiasm for the game, and was perplexed to find bouncy castles with grown men on them surrounding the outfield. Anything to avoid a day with the family was out thinking. The chaos caused by Queens and the shutting of Hammersmith bridge made the ground hard to get to, so the start was moved from 1 to 1:15 - excellent, more time to practice....or watch India bat....much the same thing. I followed in the footsteps of my mentor Brook and lost the toss - we were to field on a very green pitch, much to the delight of beedle (1-19) who cracked open a tinnie in celebration. He and Harsimran (Sammi) (1-20) took the new ball and kept the scoring tight, with Sammi bowling with real zip. Hogarth (0-51) and Alex (2-11) kept the pressure going, with Kensington 100-3 after 30 overs. Tom Briggs (1-30) Hoggy and Sheva (2-24) were attacked a little towards the end, with the last 10 costing 74 runs. Tea came and went, with the majority of both teams needing to be dragged away from Afghanistan's attempted chase of 230. The start of our innings wasn't the best - Sud (8) looked good before driving straight to mid off, former GB rower Ollie (2) was done by a peach of a slower ball and Hoggy (6), who was the only volunteer to open with Sam, hit lots of fielders but not many runs. 17-3 didnt feel great and 44-4 after 15 overs and a hard working innings by new dad Tycho (7) kept us in the game. Alex (70) and Rohit (30) steered the majority of our chase, with a 77 run partnership made of some well placed aerial strokes and some less well placed ones that on a less windy day may have gone to hand. Sheva (20*) bludgeoned the remaining runs to gallop over the line with 6 overs to go. Afghanistan may have failed with their chase but we succeeded. |
