Well, this was a very good game of cricket once it got underway, the opposition’s arrival being on the shambolic side. They bowled well, especially their skipper who opened the bowling. Only extras kept us ticking in the early overs on a decent pitch (obviously risking marking my own homework here) and recently cut outfield (thank you Brian, we should never have left it so long). That we got to 170 was all Amogh’s good work. He batted patiently for his 76 when everyone else struggled. Nice shots along the ground, few chances, really solid. Jack W looked full of potential until a momentary, er, lack of communication led to a smart run out. Rohit was snaffled by a blinding catch, the like of which he has taken so frequently this short season. Chin was crocked so only ran singles off his bat and our tail wagged less than normal. 170 is not necessarily a winning score, as their adventurous opener demonstrated going after Brian’s loose opening over: 6224.. it went. Great. Tom was tight next over, indeed his whole spell. Brian’s 7th ball was also carted but then the next was slapped to Jack W at mid off who made no mistake. Of course, their most potent batter always comes in at 7 and was dangerous. The game could’ve gone either way at 70-4, Sam having taken two fine wickets, one a real bail breaker. He encouraged us to celebrate with him, to revel in his greatness. Chinny, sensing wickets, shrugged off his tight inner thigh muscle issues to keep the pressure on but then flight and guile was introduced. JP spun his web: bowled pitching off hitting top of leg with turn and bounce. LBW for the non turner, the “arm ball” he said and, then their main man, taken at square leg by a diving Chinny, surely the “new Tushar”. The turn James found caused the ball to be only mis-hit to square. James was overheard in the bar humble-bragging with GP over who would be first to 700 Putney wickets. 130-8 and it is never over. Amogh asked Jack to take a break from his constant exhortations at mid-off (in the style of a Millwall supporting cricket fan) to try his leg spin. And it was good! All four balls on the money, two bowled (0.4-0-0-2), game over, group won, ground put away, bar hit, drinks drunk.... job done. Maybe this was not the “team win” from last week because Amogh’s contribution proved so dominant but we won because we stuck with it in the field, absorbed the pressure and we had a little more quality when it mattered. Like we did all season. |
