It had been 294 days since we took the field to play the glorious game of cricket. I shouted at my TV too many times to count, yelling at Boris to shut up and let me play cricket. Take a seat and leave me to toss the vector down the corridor. I don’t need teas, I don’t need a shower. All I need is a new ball and 21 other idiots who like standing in a field for 8 hours. Starting the season with one of the best cricket games I have played. The Make Putney Sundays Great Again Golden Thunderbitch Trophy game. MPSGAGTBT was up for grabs and the 1’s will need to claw that bottle of thunderbitch from my dying hands. With countless hours in the nets, bowling drek at Jarmola with Taylor. The scene is set! The day is here it’s Beedle vs Brooksie! Striding out to the middle with the MPSGAGTBT up for grabs. No coin available so it's a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Brooksie pulls scissors, Beedle pulls rock. Immediately deciding to bowl. The new ball in hand. Sethi on strike with a hangover (classic Sunday form). Wibbers at the other end. Taylor taking the second over. Wibbers was his first victim a few overs later. Taylor pitched it short and he tried to pull it, getting a top edge and the vector dropped safely into JBS’ gloves. Taylors victim No 2 was JJ underbowled Jarmola. Some background on this! Jarmola took a trip to Sussex to go and visit Newbery to pick out his chosen piece of willow. Then came for a net at the clubhouse with Taylor and I, and broke the toe of his willow. Off to Sussex he goes again to complain and get a repair. Getting his willow back in time for the first game of the season. You would think after all of this middling one over cover would be creamed for a four. Not today JJ. Not today my friend. Rohit ‘My Little Pony’ Deshmukh took an absolute screamer over his head. JJ sent packing on 43. Take a shower. Taylors victim No 3. Was the new man Johnny Ross. Sayer was standing at mid-off and Johnny with his chosen willow decided to clear Sayer. Nope not today pal. This is Putney Cricket Club Sunday 2’s. Sent packing! I failed to mention that JJ and Johnny Boy crossed, so this was 2 wickets in a row. Would it happen? Would he get his first hat-trick to live in Putney lore forever. More wickets than runs. All on the line. Taylors victim No 4. The field tightens crowding Brooksie, everyone's senses are heightened, the hat-trick ball is bowled. It comes out of Taylors hand, swings in and the vector hits off stump. It happened! The first time I have ever seen a hat-trick. Taylor was as shocked as Brooksie was when he was walking back. Taylors victim No 5. Skuller at the crease Taylor with five-for on the line. Another batsman trying to clear cover. Nope Rohit ‘My Little Pony’ Deshmukh hands are safe as houses at the cover position. Return to your beer sir. Taylor was absolutely shocked he got a five-for. Taylors victim No 6. The new man Bobby Oliver trying to clear Rohit ‘My Little Pony’ Deshmukh at cover again! Nope choose any other fielder and it will be dropped on the ground with certainty. Back to your chair sir. Taylors victim No 7. Hogarth comes in with no socks on and does a jumping shuffle. Fielding at fine leg, Beedle sledges him. “No need to do your dance, you won’t be here long” Golden duck LBW decision. Plum, on your bike pal. Practice your batting and not your shuffle. The 2’s were confident in the run chase. We chased it down with 2 balls to spare. After Saunders sent a ball passed a non existent mid off for a boundary to win. Two years on the trot! MPSGAGTBT winners, see you next year for an attempt to take the trophy back. It is sitting in its home on top of a cabinet, next to the Amir Rahemtulla Trophy. MOTM: Rob Taylor DDJ: Sayer for leaving a ball in the last over, when we needed 3 to win. Champagne Moment: The hat-trick Thanks For Coming: Callum Brown |
