Having sweated all the moisture out of my body last week at Elsted (Elstead?) and still bowled OK, I decided the best preparation for this week’s game was to let alcohol perform a similar function the night before. All the forecasts on the internet pointed to a day of torrential rain so I went to bed confident of waking up to a text telling me the game is off and a day spent in bed contemplating the nonsense I had chatted the night before. It turns out that sometimes information on the internet is not wholly accurate. The weather was clement and the ground in decent shape (with thanks to the chairman for coming down to give the pitch a roll on his day off). Because Brooksey hates us all he chose to lose the toss by calling heads on a Euro coin and we fielded first. Gus opened up and bowled well. Ockwell, graciously stepping in for the injured Leon, made his sole contribution by taking a catch. From the other end Skuller remembered which end of the ball to hold for once. After ten overs the farmers were 13ish for 3. Hogarth and Brooksey kept up the parsimonious hunt. The former finally got himself on the score sheet for the season. Like buses you wait ages for one and then 4 turn up at once. It should have been a Michelle but there was a disappointing catch refusal. Jug avoided. At 27-6 and then 41-7 it was looking bleak for the farmers (are they really farmers?). Life was not getting easier as Hector sent down rockets to only concede 1 run in 3 overs. The Jarbowla got his customary couple; underbowled. At this juncture the skipper opened up the buffet and treated us to the spectacle of some part timers learning that bowling is hard work. Bowlers don’t get enough respect. In fairness the last pair batted well for their runs and deserved their 70-odd stand. Hyde finished at 154 – a respectable total. I feel compelled to bring attention to our fielding – some of it was diabolical. Catches were dropped with regularity and some idiot (Smith) managed to kick the ball away rather than pick it up. On the plus side extras were minimal and there was only 1 bye – good effort from Hannaprod and Matiu (bless you) behind the sticks. Tea – ice cream and crisps because Calowries was shut and I didn't have time to go to Sainsbury’s. Jimmy Anderson probably has something similar. The chase didn’t go entirely to plan in the face of decent bowling. Wibbers paddled one to the fielder round the corner who inexcusably hung on. Hannaprod smote a mighty flat-batted six into the sight-screen but didn’t last much longer, playing all around a straight one. Blockwell was also a name on the score card. Fortunately JJ and Workman worked hard and got things moving in the right direction before a second wobble. Justin caught at cover again for 28, Matiu out for 39 and then Hector for 1. Nevertheless Seb and GCB batted excellently to get us over the line – never in doubt. The records should show that JJ triggered Seb leg before even though he had middled it into his own pads - Hyde were sporting and called Seb back. Proper village. Special mention to Brooksey for his 200th game for the club and Wibbers for 201st. That’s a lot of experience to learn from. Thanks to Hyde Farmers for a thoroughly enjoyable game and some beers afterwards. Awards: Mom – Hogarth for 4 wickets DDJ – Skuller for fielding ineptitude TFC – Ockwell Champagne moment – Hannaprod’s 6. Also cake Drop of the day – Ockwell |
