Putney A won the toss and elected to bowl first, hoping to take advantage of the heavy atmosphere and moisture in the pitch. Rain delayed the start of the game and it was agreed before starting that a reduced game of 42 over would be played. Beddington Village started well, punishing any short or loose delivery. Putney managed to get rid of the opposition skipper Yu before more heavy rain interrupted play again – this time ½ an hour was lost. The game was reduced further to 37 overs. The Putney bowlers managed to control the wet ball well and bowl a tight and tidy length, and were rewarded with good bounce when pitching just short of a length. After the first 4 wickets had fallen it was obvious that Beddington did not have much of a batting line-up on the day, with the remaining wickets falling regularly. The first four batsmen all made double figures but none was able to score more than 31. Some very tight bowling (especially by Ian Jennings) helped keep the score down to 131 all out – a modest total to chase. Putney's innings started badly with Wibbs top edging a simple catch to backward square leg with the total on 2. That brought Anthony Wysome to join Julian Day at the wicket – each playing good positive strokes to move the total onto 71 before Julian was out on 32. Anthony and Nav kept the runs ticking over before Anthony was comically caught in the covers after the ball had bobbled all over the fielder whilst on the floor before he managed to get the ball under control. Racchitt – well, he gave them some catching practice off his first delivery – much to the delight of the fielder in question (it will probably be his only catch of the season). Barry chipped in with a couple of runs and Ed McVarish finished off the game with 2 consecutively struck fours. The decision to bowl first did not give us that much of an advantage as we had a wet ball to contend with for a lot of the time. A good effort in the field ensured that a low total was required when we came to bat, which we reached in the 29th over, following some good batting by Julian, Anthony and Nav. |
