After traveling to the depths of the countryside last week, we were all glad that this one was in London. The ground was a thickish cut similar the field at Putney so we knew that it was going to be a leg day. The only way to describe the wicket was similar to Putney ie not flat, with the addition of being wet, sticky and faint smell of a wet wintery afternoon of mud after a football game. At least Sayer was going to win the toss, odds stacked in his favor after a dismissal run of losses. I placed a cheeky pint on it with Hampson that this was not to be the case and he would lose again, which to everyone surprise he did and his poor form with the coin would continue. We were put into to bat on a sticky wicket on a murky afternoon near Chessington, we were hoping for a solid start, and we got that with JBS and Sam Hampson starting well, putting the bad balls away. Then a mix – up lead to our first wicket to fall with JBS(25) trudging off. Then the man inform with the bat – ie me who hasn’t played to order cricket for while came in and went for a duck, 6 balls later playing one to a ball going down leg-side. It should have been sailing for four/six however looped up and ended in the gloves of the keeper. Manish joined Sam H at the crease, starting a good partnership till drinks at 20 overs through we were 71-2. Manish set the pace after the break from the first over with some big hits. Then another mix-up led to Hampson leaving the field for a well made (24). In comes BCB Sayer again started well smacking his 2nd ball for 4, a few good boundary overs followed from him and Manish, they had a good stand of 68 before Sayer(45) hit one back at the spinner which he caught with one mitt. Oliver came in to bat in his debut for Sunday 2nds, he looked well posed until they brought back there opening bowler who got one to castle him with one coming back in. In came our resident Aussie JS, he was happy that he got of his duck form after falling in for 0 for 3 previous games, sweeping a low full toss for 4 of his 3rd delivery. After going most balls he was too castled. CB joined Manish at the crease and played with great freedom with 2 overs left. Manish with 2 balls to go skied a shot do Cal corner which was grabbed to fall for a great 67. Cornick came on for the last ball just as a runner, and Callum very nearly ran him out. We posted 186 – 7 off 40, hitting 116 in the final 20. We had in the back of our mind how they destroyed our 216 last year at home as one of there batsmen go 100* I know another bloody Aussie. We were confident of our ability as we were length in bowling and the wicket was playing up. CB starting the bowling with Soham taking the other end, Callum bowled with great precision claiming the first scalp of the afternoon with the last ball of the second over, outswinger nick to OJ(Oliver Ruthven) who took a neat grab behind diving to his right. Soham continued with line and length bowling to claim a team hat-trick with the first two deliveries of the next over which left them stuttering at 26-3. A few quiet overs went by Callum should have had his 2nd scalp of the afternoon as there no4 batsmen looked to tonk him for six. It unfortunately went straight to me at a ¾ back long off, with all the time in the world, I steadied myself and then dropped it. Callum bowled 7 overs on the bounce and ended up with figures of (7-0-17-1). Soham bowled out his total allocation claiming a 3rd and 4th wicket in as few overs (8-4-12-4), which left them looking not to healthy on 39-5. The fielding for the team all afternoon was electric, with great throws, great catches except for the couple of drops. In came Toto and Cornick to clear up the tail. First ball of Toto’s if he had got a wicket would have meant that he too would have a hattrick after the last match (Dogmersfield) ending of the final two balls. It was the no4 batsmen again who sailed a ball, high into the south London sky, luckily, I was not the man underneath. Cornick was hoping Bucket hands Sayer was going to come sailing in and grab it, however he went left and right, and the ball slipped through his fingers, Nic hasn’t forgotten him yet. He did however get an astonishing wicket when Sam H dropped his body and left-handed plucked a beauty off Nic at Square leg, Toto ended with figures of (6-0-25-2). They moped up the tail making amazing use of the sticky wicket getting the ball to stick and bounce with accurate bowling. Cornick finishing the innings off with a good delivery leading to Sayer taking a worldie in the covers. Some would say overshadowing, Hampson's catch. (4.2-0-24-2). Champagne Moment – Sam Hampson Beauty of a Catch Thanks for Coming – To myself – I’ve got a collection of these for the season so far Man of the match – Soham Bendre bowling, special mention Manish. DDJ – Could have been Sayer for giving himself Baby Cham Moment of the week, for an okay catch(didn’t want to be left out), however was ……… |
