Sunday 2s vs Magdalen Sunday 27th June 2021 On a muggy and cloudy afternoon, the mighty Sunday 2s arrived at Kempton Cricket Club to take on Magdalen. We were feeling fresh off the back of a comfortable win last week, and our keenness manifested in the opportunity for a net before the match. The pitch was interesting - flat, but, in the words of Mackie, “green in all the wrong places”. Knowing the strength of our formidable bowling attack, Captain Sayer won the toss and put the oppo in to bat. Callum and Soham opened the bowling for Putney and kept things tight. There were more dot balls than anything else in their opening spells, and Soham’s first over was a wicket maiden, the opening bat nicking off for 1. Callum deserves a special mention here - the odd loose delivery in his first four overs was pounced on, but he was otherwise disciplined and followed this up with consecutive maidens in his fifth and sixth. On top of this, he was not feeling totally himself, and it turns out his magnificent bowling wasn’t dented by the fact that he was suffering from the dreaded COVID. Remarkable stuff. After their first 10 overs we’d managed to limit Magdalen to a miserly 31-1, testament to some great fielding and their batsman finding it tough to get the ball off the square. Jack and Nic took over as first change and continued to bowl tight lines. They were both rewarded, Jack with 2 scalps and Nic with 1. At the half way mark, we were feeling confident of having a small target to chase as the oppo had only reached 62-4. Things changed a little after the break as wickets were hard to come by and their numbers 5 and 6 put together a decent partnership, taking them to 125-4 after 33 overs. Enter Tommy Briggs who broke the partnership with a lovely slower ball which bowled their well set number 5. Briggsy’s breakthrough clearly rubbed off on Cal who returned and got their number 6 with a peach which pitched and left and snicked through to me behind the stumps. Briggsy got another in his next, as did Cal, and suddenly Magdalen were 147-8 with only 3 overs to go. Cornick and Sayer both bowled well and were unlucky not to get wickets, and it was a really good team performance in the field. Magdalen closed on 166-8, and we were pretty happy with that - it was probably a 220 odd pitch and we had a strong batting line up with batsmen in form. After tea, Mackie and Sorger strode out to the middle with purpose. They both looked in great shape, respecting the good balls with solid defense and sending bad balls to the fence with ease. Sorger was unlucky to get one that kept low and he was struck in front for a well compiled 28. We were on 52-1 after 14 overs and things were ticking along nicely. Hampson joined Mackie and looked watchful and technically solid. After a few dot balls, he chased a wide one and dislocated his shoulder - an old injury which reared its ugly head and he decided to retire rather than aggravate it. Briggsy came out, looking for runs after a little dry spell with the bat. He started carefully, ably supporting Mackie, who was making it all look very easy, and closing in on a half century. He brought it up with a trademark punch off the back foot. After 30 overs, we looked to be strolling home at 122-1. Mackie fell in the next over, caught and bowled for a superb 70. This was perhaps his only error in what had otherwise been a totally chanceless innings - I’m looking forward to cheering a ton for him in the coming weeks. Manish continued his excellent form with the bat, punishing anything loose and running well between the wickets. He and Briggsy took things through to the 37th, when Briggsy was castled for a nice little 22. Sayer (7*) and Manish (33*) expertly guided us to the win in the 39th, and this completed an excellent all round performance from Putney. The match was only marred by a few of our band of brothers coming down with COVID in the week following the game. Wishing them all a speedy recovery and looking forward to another win when we are freed from isolation! Oli |
