October cricket The mighty Putney Sundays turned out for the last game of the season against Graces on a worryingly nice day in October. Within minutes, things started to go wrong. Nic (and he alone) massively screwed up the sightscreen and tried to blame me, not the first time he disgraced himself that day, but we’ll get to that. Also turns out the covers don’t really work and after a vigorous debate whether to roll the pitch or not, the roller came out and made one side relatively playable. After not having a coin (cash is so 2019), Brookes tossed his phone, giving the impact absorber a run for it’s money and after what felt like a lifetime and an incredibly long consultation with their team, Graces decided to bat first, a pretty alpha move away from home. The first 10 overs saw it all, with Brookes and skuller opening up whilst Hogarth was progressively getting more pissed off about the ball being thrown on the floor, Manish was a pretty bad offender on this but the worst offender was Nic, who dropped a regulation catch off their opening batter, who went on to score 75 and after detailed mathematical and econometric analysis, it can be concluded that it cost us the game. Nic Saunders cost us the game, he then started rubbing his hands, pathetically feigning injury, we’ve all tried pulling that one mate. They had a few decent batters and Nic (the good one) as well as Hogarth bowled particularly well. Saunders did ok, but didn’t make up for his dropped catch which, as detailed previously, cost us the game At the turn of the innings, on a pitch which was a tricky one, it absolutely belted it down for about 10 minutes, before the sun came back out, either rain properly or not at all. This made the pitch even trickier. However, the pitch was irrelevant for the first wicket, a mix up between Manish and Ro caused Manish to be ran out, no one is really sure who’s fault it is, but on balance of probability, it was probably Manish’s fault. We carried on going okay for a bit before a pretty heavy collapse, Nic hit his first ever six, not just for Putney, but during his whole life and we unfortunately succumbed to defeat, we’ll blame the pitch. We then cleaned up for the season and went back to the bar, where the opposition had pretty good chat. Amogh even managed to take some time away from the brotherhood of monks to make an appearance in the middle of the longest trip to Waitrose anyone has ever been on. Few more pints, decent chat and now we await indoor nets. Decent Sunday, not the result we wanted to finish on and for that we can blame Nic Saunders. |
