In statistics the Neyman-Pearson lemma tells us that the ratio of likelihoods is the most powerful test statistic when comparing two hypotheses. In cricket the Smith-Jarmola lemma tells us that the most powerful test of team unity is the reaction of a batsman to an umpiring decision they disagree with. Is this relevant? Perhaps. Hampton and Woodlawn was the scene of a notorious Putney triumph two years ago; a shoulder dislocation, a Baywatch re-enactment and the skull king not batting like a knob for once delivered the big W. This time we hoped for a more sedate afternoon – no-one needs to see Hogarth’s rig twice in a lifetime. On pitch inspection I proclaimed the pitch a road only for the Jarbowla to react with incredulity. We banged out 250-odd in 39 overs. Batting track. There were contributions all the way down the order. Wibbs looked excellent as always (undone by a decent ball), Hannaprod unusually aggressive at the top. Rob Cross and new man Ifan were the backbone to get us to an excellent score, both unleashing an aesthetic array of shots. Looking good is what matters. Ifan’s 80 was apparently his first bat for a long time and deservedly earned him MOM on debut. Tea was a Star Bar. Lovely. In the field we were generally alert. Although wickets fell at regular intervals the opposition batted with application, in particular their debutants. The skipper combined his customary inspiring leadership with an excellent spell with the ball for a winning combination: two wickets and, most importantly, two maidens. Ed Forrester bowled with equal skill for a lovely pair of wickets. Hoggy deserved far more from a very good spell – I can almost taste the incoming ton jug. The statistical pick though is Andy who claimed a four-fer jug avoidance (plus TFC avoidance). Catches were in general held, including a screamer at first slip and a sharp grab for the stumper standing up. Top effort all round. Many thanks to Hampton and Woodlawn for hosting – a very nice bunch of chaps and a pleasant place to play cricket. Awards: DDJ – Justin for top-level dickery Champagne moment – 2nd Lieutenant Charlie Romeo Oscar Sierra Sierra taking a military call in the innings break TFC - Nicky MOM - Ifan |
