Having missed an early phone call from Jon Jarrett saying he couldn't play due to ill health and only discovering so at 11.35 on Saturday morning it was panic stations at the Skippers household. Frantic phone calls eventually traced Barry Perinparaja who kindly offered to stand in as a late replacement (many thanks Barry). Anyway, we set off with a full team and on arriving at the ground the word from the wise old men (Ed Mc and Mike Curtis) was "Whatever you do - bowl first!!!" Needless to say I lost the toss and their skipper had no hesitation in electing to bowl first. Batting on a pitch with as lively and variable bounce as this one soon had Putney in trouble with Wibbers not troubling the scorer at all. Quack Quack! Only Kaplan seemed able to strike the ball with any authority making what turned out to be an invaluable 43 runs. Barry and Des both made useful contributions (in the context of the game) with 14 runs apiece, being the joint second highest scores for Putney!! In the end we were all out for 118, a total which was realistically 30 to 50 runs short of being defendable. Old Isleworthians started their innings at pace, seemingly able to score freely and after 8 overs had scored over 50 runs. Nick Jarrett to his credit, recognised that he was conceding too many runs and asked to be taken out of the bowling attack. Grant Taylor was then introduced into the attack to see if a different line, bowling his left arm round the wicket could make a difference, and he produced some absolute beauties with the ball pitching outside leg stump and tracking laterally to bisect wicket keeper and first slip. Old Isleworthians were beginning to get a bit of the same treatment they gave our early batsmen. Gerard at the other end was bowling a good line and length and took 2 top order wickets and finished with 8-0-32-2. Grant was unlucky to not take any wickets but he had started to create pressure on the batsmen as the flow of runs began to dry up. A double bowling change brought Des Telfer and Ed McVarish into the attack. If ever proof was needed that shocking first balls can sometimes bring rewards, then this was it. Des started with a 3 pace run up, pitched it about a 1/3 of the way down the track, the ball sat up in slow motion and the batsmens eyes grew as big as saucers. He smashed it towards the square leg umpire and Racchitt at square leg, as casual as you like, stuck out one hand in vain hope only to feel the ball nestling into the palm of his hand. The jury is still out as to whether Racchitt knocked the umpire over or whether he tumbled over in sheer fright as the ball whistled towards him. He landed on his arse in any case! This bit of fielding helped lift the team morale and suddenly at 85 for 4, we thought we still had a slim chance and needed to remain sharp and super-focussed. The next 13 overs brought about the best spirited team effort and fight back I have had the pleasure to be involved in. The opposition, needing about 30 runs with 7 wickets remaining, seemed unable to score with any fluency. Des, with 3 wickets for 11 runs in 7 overs, and Eddie with 4 wickets for 12 runs in 6.2 overs finished off the match for us. A great all round fielding and bowling effort. |
