The Sunday 2s returned to Putney for what will hopefully be a full season of cricket. 10 of the team were in attendance at the club at 12.15, a full hour and 45 before the game was due to begin – I think that is a record. Sunday service resumed with the oppo arriving ten minutes before stumps. Any thought that Jonty would be missed was dismissed with the arrival of the brothers Milton who provided full commentary on the days events. Putney lost the toss and were put in. Adam Milton showed promised signs before being dismissed lbw – the ball hitting him on his thigh pad. Jonathon Bailey then hit a quick fire 54, dispatching the bowling to all parts of the lower common. Quick wickets meant a period of consolidation was needed at 20 overs before we could hit out after 30 – Ashworth scoring 28 and Danish 16. Putney recovered to 185 ao. The Harry Fernandez moment for the day was provided by Nigel Harris (the third Milton brother) in his first ever game of cricket. Batting no 11 he went to bat and took guard at the bowlers end not having realised that the wicket had been on the last ball of the over. Despite being a little confused at the fact he was facing the keeper it still needed Mike as umpire to let him know. He compounded matters by then backing up on the bowlers side of the wicket. Welcome to Putney Nige. Great opening spells from Danish and Riddles kept the run rate low but Dulwich crept back to within 6 an over. Jonathon Bailey then completed a man of the match performace with 3/18 and Danish returned to complete a 4 wicket haul and the match seemed to be won with Dulwich on 136/9. However the number 6 Dominic proceeded to smash 60 runs with a great display of clean hitting in the gathering gloom. Victory was then taken with over an over to spare. Despite the loss it was exciting cricket and a great game to start the season. The match was played in the spirit it should be and we look forward to facing Dulwich again later in the season. |
